Dr. Areku, or Areku Hakase, is a professor and scientist that appears in some stories of the Super Mario Kodansha manga. He is a middle-aged man with a black beard who wears winter clothing. He wears a ushanka with the word「天才」(tensai, "genius") written on it.
In the Super Mario Land 2 volume, he is the founder and teacher of the Areku Hakase Tetris Genshō Kenkyūjo, where he teaches the way to be better at Tetris, and invites Mario to improve his skill after almost losing King Tetris' challenge. During the rematch, Mario wins thanks to Areku, but fearing of King Tetris' cheap tricks, Areku disarms the bombs: a saving grace since King Tetris attempts to blow up the town anyway. Furious, King Tetris summons the Tetton Daimajin; while it is forming, Areku gets trapped under some rubble. He then passes a pendant to Mario that contains the instructions to execute a glitch in a multiplayer match, recommending him to use it as a last resort. In the last panel, Areku is shown to be alive and well.
In the Super Mario Land 4 volume, during the Solar Striker story, Dr. Areku has created the Time Machine Robo, able to open time portals. Accidentally opening one, Mario and Peach's descendants, Marīo and Pichi-hime, fall from the year 2159, but their enemy, Torino Daiō, accidentally grabs Mario and Peach and drags them into the future. The time tunnel closes behind them. Areku spends his time trying to open a new one that Marīo and Pichi can use to return to their era and help their ancestors. He then suggests activating one from the Moon, where he takes the opportunity to leave an important floppy disk so that, in the future, Mario can take it. Later, Areku opens a portal to the future and Marīo and Pichi pass through it (although Marīo gets stuck, and when the portal closes, he is cut in half). At the end of the story, Areku finally optimizes the portal and enjoys the victory with Mario, Peach, and their respective descendants. His own descendant, Āreku Taichō, is the captain of the Federation Army in the future.
