Ishnail, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Ishnail is a snail-like creature who is the leader of the Robbo Thieves and the rival of Don Pianta in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. His name is a play on Ishmael and "snail". He is the second Paper Mario character whose name is a reference to Ishmael, the first being Fishmael from Paper Mario.

Ishnail's base of operations can be found on the east side of Rogueport. Under his influence, the east side is far less secure than the West. It is unkempt, dirty, and serves as a hiding place for many bandits. His guard Gus even demands money for entering the further part of the east side. The west side is, on the contrary, rather secure and clean.

For 64 coins (a reference to the Nintendo 64), Ishnail informs Mario that he needs to buy a Dried Mushroom, followed by a Dizzy Dial, in Peeka's shop, a secret sign known only to friends of Don Pianta. He then tells Mario to answer "Yellow" when asked what his favorite color is. It is possible to avoid paying Ishnail if the player knows these instructions.

Following each of the later chapters, Ishnail makes a comment about each location Mario visited for that chapter. Ishnail used to go to Glitzville when he had pull in Rogueport, he is not familiar with Twilight Town, he is not keen on going to Keelhaul Key because of the risk of getting cursed, he would like to go to Poshley Heights to start trouble, and he thinks the notion of Mario going to the Moon is too far-fetched. After the Shadow Queen is defeated, Ishnail praises Mario for clearing out the darkness and welcomes him into the Robbos' territory.

Tattle[edit]

  • "That's Ishnail, leader of the thief band called the Robbos. He REALLY hates Don Pianta. I guess that's to be expected, since they're bitter rivals and everything. He's got some issues about money, but he's OK otherwise. Who knew?"
