“Congratulations, Luigi! You have found the real Crystal Star!”
Pennington, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Garnet Star is the sixth of the Crystal Stars Mario collects in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, obtained after finishing Chapter 6: 3 Days of Excess.

The Garnet Star is kept in a secret area of the Poshley Sanctum in Poshley Heights, which the Sanctum's owner, Pennington, did not even know about. A fake Garnet Star is on display in the main hall of the Sanctum, which is meant to attract tourists and trick thieves, which works on the Three Shadows and Doopliss, as well as Bowser and Kammy Koopa, as they confuse it with the real thing. This makes the fake Garnet Star an actual red herring, fitting the detective theme of Chapter 6. Upon finding the real Garnet Star, it teaches Mario the move Showstopper.

During the final battle with the Shadow Queen, when the Crystal Stars spread out to the locations in which they were found, the Garnet Star returns to the Poshley Sanctum, where Pennington (realizing Mario is not Luigi), Toodles, Goldbob, Bub, and Sylvia root for Mario and his team before they defeat the Shadow Queen.
