Technetium (talk | contribs) (→Names in other languages: As requested by an anonymous user, I am adding the Chinese names for each of the Crystal Stars - I'm also adding citations while I'm at it. Adding the descriptions from the menu may be overkill, but I don't just want to quote the name again. The issue is that the French and Spanish versions don't label each star as "star" in the menu, so I'll have to find another place where they're named to cite) |

- “I found it down there in Hooktail's belly. Nice, huh? I was gonna keep it as a souvenir... But if this is the thing you've been looking for, you can have it!”
- —Koopley, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)
The Diamond Star is the first of the Crystal Stars Mario collects in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, obtained upon completion of Chapter 1: Castle and Dragon.
According to Grifty, Hooktail Castle was constructed by the Shadow Queen to hold a Crystal Star, likely the Diamond Star.[1] As the in-game map description for Hooktail Castle mentions that it was "built to accommodate Hooktail's bulk", it can be presumed that Hooktail, one of the Shadow Queen's pets, was tasked with guarding the star. Some time after the four heroes sealed the Shadow Queen using the Crystal Stars, Hooktail regained possession of the Diamond Star and ate it.
10 years prior to the events of the game, Koopley, who had been swallowed whole after failing to defeat the dragon, finds the Diamond Star in her stomach and decides to hold onto it as a "souvenir". During their quest, Mario and his partners traverse Hooktail Castle and defeat Hooktail in hopes of recovering the Diamond Star, as well as to stop her from continuing to terrorize the citizens of Petalburg. Upon defeating her, Hooktail spits out Koopley, who gives Mario the Diamond Star for being his son's friend. Collecting the Diamond Star teaches Mario the move Earth Tremor to use in battle.
The fourth question of both the 65th and 66th Trivia Quiz-Off asks about the location of the Diamond Star, with the correct answers being "Hooktail Castle" and "Hooktail's Belly" respectively. In one of the Creepy Steeple Boo's quizzes in the remake, the Diamond Star is an incorrect answer for "Which Crystal Star was found inside the X-Naut Fortress?", possibly to trick the player considering its similar appearance to the correct answer, the Crystal Star.
During the final battle with the Shadow Queen, when the Crystal Stars spread out to the locations in which they were found, the Diamond Star retreats to Petalburg, where its residents, including Koopley, Kroop and Koopie Koo cheer on for Mario and his team.

Trivia[edit]
- The Diamond Star and the Gold Star are the only Crystal Stars that are not from a chapter that involves the X-Nauts or the Three Shadows in any way.
- However, as revealed in the post-Chapter 1 intermission, the X-Nauts were aware of Hooktail "maybe" having a Crystal Star.
