To use it, Mario must have the Gold Star. When used, a window will pop up with Red Arrows, Blue Arrows, Poison Mushrooms, and a cursor. If the cursor is used on either the red or blue arrow, it will raise Attack (Red Arrow) or Defense (Blue Arrow). Each arrow will raise its respective gauge located under the window. When one of the gauges reaches max, the gauge will reset and will add +1 to the amount raised next to the gauge. The Poison Mushroom however will slow the cursor speed and make it difficult to raise a stat.
The Action Command involves a 3x3 grid of panels that periodically appear and disappear. There are three types of panels: red arrows, blue arrows, and Poison Mushrooms. The player controls a cursor with the gcn, which can be moved up, down, left, and right, with the goal being to press gcn while the cursor is on arrow panels. Doing so partially fills a gauge of the same color, with five arrows being needed to fill it completely. Every time a gauge is filled, one point will be added to the matching stat once the move is over - red arrows boost attack, while blue ones boost defense. Pressing a Poison Mushroom drastically slows down the cursor's movement speed for a short time, making it harder to collect arrows.

In the remake, only four arrows are needed to complete a gauge, rather than five. This results in a higher average boost, with a boost of 4 to both stats being the maximum.

Power Lift is a Special Move that can be used by Mario in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. It raises the Attack and Defense of Mario and his current partner for three turns and requires 3 SP to use. The success of the Action Command determines the number of points each stat is raised by. To use the move, Mario must have the Gold Star, which is obtained at the end of Chapter 3.

The Action Command involves a 3x3 grid of panels that periodically appear and disappear. There are three types of panels: red arrows, blue arrows, and Poison Mushrooms. The player controls a cursor with the Control Stick, which can be moved up, down, left, and right, with the goal being to press A Button while the cursor is on arrow panels.
