History
Mario Kart series
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Fire Chains first appear in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. They appear in both Waluigi Stadium and Wario Colosseum alongside normal Fire Bars in the former, where they burn any racer that comes in contact with them. The Fire Chains in Waluigi Stadium are made up of eight fireballs while the ones in Wario Colosseum have seven.
Mario Kart DS
Fire Chains are obstacles in Mario Kart DS. They are encountered in Wario Stadium only. They play the same role of burning any racer who touch them, except they only have five fireballs each.
Mario Kart Wii
Fire Chains are obstacles in Mario Kart Wii. They are encountered once again in GCN Waluigi Stadium, and in the game's Bowser's Castle. They are made up of three fireballs each.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Fire Chains reappear in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, where they only appear in DS Wario Stadium and GCN Waluigi Stadium. Here they are once again the main obstacle along with normal Fire Bars.
Mario Kart Tour
Fire Chains reappear in Mario Kart Tour, only appearing in GCN Waluigi Stadium, which debuted in the 2023 Mario vs. Luigi Tour. They appear and function identically to how they've been presented in all other entries in the series.
Super Mario series
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Fire Chains are obstacles in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They appear in Bowser's Lava Lair, on the starting planet, and the fireball planet, and the Slipsand Galaxy on its starting planet. They behave the way they do in the Mario Kart games, though sometimes, they go around planets instead of circling in the air.
Super Mario Run
Fire Chains, also referred to as rings of fire, return in Super Mario Run, They appear as a complete "ring of fire" rather than separate sets of fireballs. They appear only in the course Rings of Fire!. Some move up and down. Coins, including Color coins, are often seen within the rings. Going through one without taking damage is a stylish move called Threading the Ring, and this move produces blue stars. In Toad Rally, these stars contribute to starting a Coin Rush. It also immediately gets a Toad to cheer for the player.
