Leaf piles[1] are commonly found in autumn-themed stages within the Super Mario and Donkey Kong franchises. They commonly release an item if interacted with in a certain way.
History
Super Mario Galaxy
In Super Mario Galaxy, leaf piles appear on the Gold Leaf Galaxy's starting planet. Spinning into a leaf pile gives the player character either three Star Bits or a coin.
Mario Kart series
Leaf piles also appear in the Mario Kart series, first in the course Maple Treeway, introduced in Mario Kart Wii and returning in Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. They are also in the autumn variation of the Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe course Animal Crossing. In these games, leaf piles act similarly to crates, disappearing when hit by an item or racer and dispensing Bananas, coins, Mushrooms, and, occasionally, Super Stars.
