Lord Fredrik (sometimes referred to as simply Fredrik[1]) is the main antagonist and the sixth and final boss of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and its Nintendo Switch port, fought in the level Volcano Dome. He is the leader of the Snowmads, who invaded Donkey Kong Island and claimed it as their territory.

Physical description[edit]

During the game's opening, Lord Fredrik is mostly shown as a silhouette, with only his glowing pale blue eyes having visibility. However, during Volcano Dome, he is revealed to be a massive Waldough with dark gray skin and a black mustache. For attire, Fredrik wears a large double-horned helmet with a pale blue rhombus-shaped crystal on the front, a large white fur cape, bracelets with pale blue rhombus-shaped crystals similar to the one on his helmet across the surfaces, a white fur skirt, a belt with the Snowmad insignia on the front and smaller and circular pale blue crystals across its strap and black briefs.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]

During the game's intro, Lord Fredrik and his followers approach Donkey Kong Island on Donkey Kong's birthday. After taking a closer look at the island through his telescope, a Pointy Tucks informs the Snowmad King of its findings. Fredrik laughs evilly as he blows into his enchanted horn, summoning an ice dragon, which blows the Kongs away from the island. The Snowmads then invade the island by stationing their command ship on top of the Volcano as the ice dragon throws it into a state of perpetual winter.

When Donkey Kong and his friends later return to the island, they make their way to the now-frozen volcano to battle Lord Fredrik; throughout the level Meltdown Mayhem, Lord Fredrik can be heard laughing in the background (although the clip used originates from Tiki Tong in Donkey Kong Country Returns). Upon reaching Fredrik's quarters, the Kongs find him standing in front of his throne as his underlings cheer for him. The Kongs then interrupt them by slamming on the icy ground in front of Fredrik. Amused of their arrival, Fredrik jumps towards the Kongs and shatters the icy ground, causing them to fall into the depths of the volcano. After landing in a basalt field, Fredrik challenges the Kongs to a final battle. However, he is eventually defeated and blasted out of the volcano by the Kongs. He flies right through his stationed command ship and destroys it and crashes into the sea where the remaining Snowmad ships are stationed, ending the Snowmads' reign over Donkey Kong Island. He also drops his horn, which Donkey Kong uses to restore the island to its former climate.

Boss battle[edit]

Volcano Dome
The battle starts as Lord Fredrik prepares to send his minions onto the arena.

Lord Fredrik begins the battle by jumping into the background and increasing in size. He begins firing several ice balls out of his horn at the Kongs, who must dodge them; some of them will progressively release Tuff Tucks, Tuff Fluffs and Tenacious Tucks as the battle continues, which can be stomped on, picked up, and thrown at Fredrik to cause damage. Lord Fredrik will begin darting from side to side when the Kongs pick up a Snowmad, but will eventually pause to adjust his helmet or laugh tauntingly.

He will repeat his attack pattern until hit by a Snowmad, at which point he shrinks to his original size and returns to the foreground, trying to charge into the Kongs with his horned helmet. The Kongs must jump over Fredrik and land on his exposed back to damage him. If the first charge misses and Fredrik is not damaged, he may turn around and attempt another. If he stops the pattern, he will spring into the near platform, sinking them into the lava and moving onto the next platform.

After taking a few hits, Fredrik will roar in rage and begin a few new attacks. When he jumps to the background for his iceball attack, he will first use his horn to create a flock of ice dragons that crash onto the battlefield. The dragons are preceded by shards of ice falling from the top of the screen, allowing the Kongs to evade their dives. If the dragons do not hit the Kongs, they will freeze part of the battlefield, making it harder to maneuver.

When Fredrik returns to the foreground, his charge attack will occur at longer and faster intervals. After receiving enough damage, he will perform a spinning jump, which creates five pillars of lava that lift up all the platform except for the one he is standing on. Once the lava pillars subside, the platforms will remain airborne for a short while before they sink into the lava one by one.

Once Fredrik takes enough damage, he also summons ice dragons from his horn. The ice dragons fly across the stage, but leave room for evasion by either jumping or crouching - the Kongs must jump over the low-flying dragons and crouch under the high-flying dragons.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lord Fredrik appears as a primary, Novice-class spirit. His spirit battle is against a white King K. Rool on the Battlefield version of Summit with an icy floor.
