History

Super Mario series

Bony Beetles appear in Super Mario World and its remake. They are depicted as bipedal and with red shoes, except the blue-tinged one in the credits cutscene, which has blue shoes. Bony Beetles are first encountered in Vanilla Fortress. The pattern of a Bony Beetle is to walk around, stop, and stick its spikes out. The spikes of a Bony Beetle damage the player character, even if he is spin jumping. A stomped Bony Beetle falls apart before reassembling itself seconds later, similarly to a Dry Bones. A Bony Beetle is defeated from being hit by a cape, but not fireballs.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Bony Beetles return in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. They are depicted similarly as in Super Mario World, but their sprites from being disassembled are different. Bony Beetles are encountered in the World-e levels Swinging Bars of Doom and Bowser's Last Stand. Bony Beetles on blocks are not affected if hit from below.

Bony Beetles return in New Super Mario Bros. U and its port. They use their quadrupedal design introduced in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Bony Beetles are encountered in towers and castles mainly, but are featured also in underground and volcanic habitats. Bony Beetles behave the same as before, but the port adds sound effects for when they activate and retract their spikes. Bony Beetles are defeated either from being frozen by an Ice Ball and being destroyed with the ice they are in, being crushed, or from stretching platforms being hit from below. A Bony Beetle in Ludwig's Clockwork Castle be defeated temporarily if it gets crushed between a moving platform and wall while disassembled, though the Bony Beetle returns to normal if the player character going a distance offscreen before returning.

Super Mario-kun

A giant Bony Beetle appears in volume 4 of Super Mario-kun, based on Super Mario World. It shoots spikes to form a prison-like structure as well as lasers from its eyes. When it rams into Mario, it sends him flying into a block, releasing a Dragon Coin. When Yoshi grabs the Dragon Coin, his tongue swirls out of control and defeats the Bony Beetle.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Bony Beetles are enemies in Paper Mario. They are encountered in Bowser's Castle. Bony Beetles on the field use a Shell Toss, giving them the First Strike if it hits Mario. They also use the move in battle, dealing three units of damage to the target. If Bony Beetles have their spikes out, they jump on Mario, dealing five units of damage. A Bony Beetle can stick its spikes in and out willfully. Bony Beetles with their spikes retracted can be flipped from a jump, with their Defense lowered to 0 in this state, and they use the next turn getting back up.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Bony Beetles return in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They are depicted as quadrupeds to resemble Buzzy Beetles more closely, a design that would be reused for later appearances. A Bony Beetle extends its spikes if Mario tries to stomp it, unlike before, so an Iron Jump sticker is required to attack them with an attack. A Bony Beetle attacks only by taking out its spikes before headbonking Mario, though the Bony Beetle rolls over if it misses.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Bony Beetles do not appear in Paper Mario: The Origami King, though concept art at the Musée Champignon and an unused string of their name in the data shows that Bony Beetles were planned to appear as Folded Soldiers.

Mario Party series

Bony Beetles appear seldomly in the Mario Party series. One appears at the second and third Star Stages of Star-Crossed Skyway in Mario Party: Island Tour and gives two Mini Ztars to whoever makes it over to them. A Bony Beetle makes a cameo as a possible guess in the minigame Absent Minded in Super Mario Party.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

Bony Beetles appear in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, as uncommon enemies. They are Dark-attributed enemies and are mainly found in towers and castles.

This game also introduces their larger counterparts, Big Bony Beetles. They appear in World 5-Castle, World 6-Tower 1, World 6-Tower 2, World 6-Castle, World 7-Tower 2, World 8-Tower 1, World 8-6, World 8-Tower 2, World 8-11, and World 8-Tower 3.

As teammates, Bony Beetles have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 3/6, and a RCV rating of 1/6. Their Beetle Shield Skill reduces the damage received by half for two turns, and their Awoken Skill, Dark Boost, raises the ATK of the player's Dark team members if a horizontal line of Dark orbs is cleared.

Dr. Mario World

Bony Beetles are assistants in Dr. Mario World. In stage mode, their effect is to increase the score that resulted from a capsule match if that match eliminated four or more viruses simultaneously, where the percentage of the score increase is greater at higher levels, where it is 15% at the first level and 75% at the maximum level. In versus mode, their effect is to eliminate the lowest row of objects when the player's play area shrinks to only three rows left, meaning that the area would need to have nine rows of Empty Blocks for this effect to activate, where it is only 20% at the first level and 100% at the maximum level. The Bony Beetle assistant can be obtained as a reward for clearing the first area in World 13.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

Bony Beetles are non-playable characters in Golf Adventure mode of Mario Golf: Super Rush. They are capable of speech. Bony Beetles are encountered in Balmy Dunes.
