History

Cutscene showing the chapter 6 characters giving support to Mario through the Garnet Star in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)
The engineer joins others in Poshley Heights to lend support to Mario

On the first day of the train's trip to Poshley Heights, Bub, one of the passengers on the train, wants to be an engineer when he grows up, so he asks Mario if he can get an autograph from the engineer as his birthday present. The engineer is flattered at the request and happily obliges. Bub gives Mario a Shine Sprite for getting the autograph.

On the third day, the engineer, Ghost T., and the train shopkeeper, who was knocked unconscious, are the only passengers or staff not absorbed by the Smorg mob that has kidnapped everyone else; however, Smorgs begin flooding the windshield and windows while Mario is talking to him. His immediate thought is for Mario and his partners to go ensure the safety of the rest of the passengers given he has to keep the train running, unaware that they've already been absorbed by the Smorgs.

During the game's final, climactic battle against the Shadow Queen, who has possessed Princess Peach, the engineer joins the residents of Poshley Heights as they shout support into the Garnet Star to aid Mario and his partners. Whereas he is present for this in the remake on the Nintendo Switch, he is absent from this cutscene in the original game.

Tattle

  • "That's the engineer of the Excess Express. Talk about a dream job for kids! But just saying you drive a train doesn't make you cool. You gotta LOVE the job! I mean, we're talking about a train, here. That's some serious responsibility!"

Trivia

  • Despite being a Toad, the black cap that the engineer wears is distinctly smaller than the mushroom cap usually seen on Toads' heads, indicating that either the mushroom cap is separable or the engineer's is unusually small.
