The Vault Guard shows Mario about one of the items he is about to encounter later in his adventure

The Vault Guard is a Toad in charge of guarding the treasury of the Mushroom Castle. In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the Chancellor gave Mario access to the vault to help the hero in his quest to find Princess Toadstool. The Vault Guard accompanied Mario to the vault and explained how various items worked.

The Vault Guard is shown to be cowardly. For example, during Mack's invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Vault Guard ran away and hid in the guest room instead of protecting the treasures of the vault.
