Charmy Bee is a hyperactive bee character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and a member of the Chaotix Detective Agency along with Espio and Vector. In the Super Mario franchise, Charmy appears throughout the Mario & Sonic series, most commonly as a referee during certain olympic events.

History

Mario & Sonic series

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Charmy in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Charmy appears as a referee in Triple Jump. In the Nintendo DS version, he appears as a referee for Sonic characters in Javelin Throw, Hammer Throw, 10m Platform, Trampoline and Vault.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Charmy returns as a referee throughout the game's events, dropping the puck in the Ice Hockey event during the Face Off. He also appears in the Adventure Tour of the Nintendo DS version. In it, the other members of the Chaotix left him behind in Cubyrinth while they were traveling. He will not open the gates he is in front of unless the player finds Vector and brings him to Charmy. Charmy will then argue with Vector and he will start a quiz. If the player completes the quiz, Charmy will cheer and open the gates. If the player talks to him enough times, he will tell the player the number of whitestones on Dream Island.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

Charmy returns as a referee in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and also appears as a character that can be spoken to in London Party mode in order to play minigames and earn stickers. A Mii costume based on Charmy can be unlocked for the player to wear, and Charmy will also occasionally send the player mail.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, Charmy appears as a referee in Hammer Throw, Javelin Throw and Shot Put. Charmy also appears in the game's story mode, where he finds Mario, Luigi, Toad, Sonic and Tails at the British Museum with Espio, and directs them to four different locations around London where Bowser and Dr. Eggman's minions are causing trouble. He goes with Luigi to the London Tennis Club, where they find Waluigi confronting Metal Sonic, before following the pair to Eton Dorney, where Charmy and Luigi meet back up with Mario and Toad and they watch Wario and Waluigi take on Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic before destroying the fog machine. They leave Wario and Waluigi to deal with Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman before heading back to the Main Stadium. Charmy also appears in the final episode, where he calls the Heroes from the Main Stadium to offer them support when they face Bowser and Dr. Eggman, and later appears at the opening ceremony. A badge of Charmy can also be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Charmy once again appears as a referee in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In the Wii U version, the player needs to talk to him to play Heroes Showdown mode in single player. (To play it in multiplayer, the player has to talk to Birdo instead.)

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Charmy referees the Boxing and Karate events.

Super Smash Bros. series

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Charmy appears as a sticker, and also appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS as a trophy. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Charmy appears as a spirit alongside Vector and Espio.

Charmy brings a positive attitude to the Chaotix Detective Agency. To him, work is a blast! He's still a kid, though, and he has a lot to learn. His energetic nature can also annoy Vector. He's been keeping himself busy as a bee ever since he first showed up in Knuckles' Chaotix. (American English)
All work and no play makes Charmy...um... Actually, he doesn't really see a difference between those two things. His hyperactivity can get on Vector's nerves sometimes, but Charmy just can't sit still! He's been keeping himself busy as a bee ever since he first showed up in Knuckles' Chaotix. (British English)
