Tortes are a type of Terrapin that work as chefs in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the Nintendo Switch remake. Their name is German for "layer cake", and resembles "tortoise". Only two of them, Chef Torte and his apprentice, appear in the game, and work as the bakers in Marrymore. They attack Mario after he stops the wedding between Booster and Princess Peach, which meant their cake would go to waste.
Battle[edit]
Despite their statistics, the Tortes are absolutely invincible and cannot be defeated. Their only attack consists of demanding that Mario stops before running up and punching him. Mario must instead attack the cake, known as Bundt, which will eventually come to life as the 'true' boss battle and scare the two off.
Although this is the only occasion Tortes are battled in the final game, there are a few unused enemy formations involving them, potentially meaning they were intended to be a generic enemy at some point instead.[1] Alternatively, they could have been intended as placeholders for some other enemy.

Trivia[edit]
- In the Japanese version, Chef Torte and his apprentice both have the same speech pattern (often using「ノ」as a sentence ender). In the English version, only the former is shown to have an outward accent. Despite this, the quirk slips through in a few text strings, such as their shared thought. This mannerism is likely an allusion to okama (effeminate male) and/or a play on「ノコック」(Nokokku, Torte).[2] Some of the remake's other languages such as Spanish give Chef Torte a lisp, with the Italian version additionally having him slip puns out of "Tortolo" (Torte), while the apprentice remains closer to the English version.
