Mario encountering shifting walls in New Super Mario Bros.

Shifting walls[1] are hazardous obstacles in the Super Mario franchise. They debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, starting from World 1-Fortress, where spikes are attacked to their sides or are simply formed by moving wooden blocks. Spikeless walls would appear in Super Mario World in #2 Morton's Castle. While the player can avoid the obstacles, if the shifting walls crush the player, the player loses a life. They reappear as obstacles in New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
