Chairlifts, sometimes known as Ski Lifts, are hanging, rail-based platforms found in mountainous regions. In the extended Mario franchise, they are almost exclusively used to cross bottomless pits. Similar objects are the Gonzola and Cable Car.
History
Yoshi's Island series
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Ski Lifts are the titular focus of the stage Ride the Ski Lifts. They usually move back and forth along their rails, though sometimes instead they move in one direction and fall off when they reach the end. In many cases, they are already ridden in by Dr. Freezegoods which must be removed or avoided.
Yoshi's New Island
In Yoshi's New Island, Ski Lifts appear in Ski Lift Leap with the same role as in the predecessor.
Super Mario 64
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, a single chairlift appears near the bottom of the explorable portion of Cool, Cool Mountain. It is on a diagonal rail stretching from near Tuxie's mother at the bottom up to near where the head portion of the Headless Snowman is. In the middle of its range is a small floating island with a Bob-omb Buddy and in the remake, a Star Switch. It always starts at the bottom, only moving once Mario (or another character in the remake) lands on it, and stopping again after it returns to the bottom if he has left it.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and its Game Boy Advance remake, two sets of chairlifts appear on the map of Razor Ridge, each being run by a twin member of the Brothers Bear. Benny's Chairlifts are needed to complete the world, though Björn's Chairlifts are only needed to reach a secret cave. The latter set starts out broken and requires the No.6 wrench to return it to normal operation.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, a lengthy set of chairlifts make up Whiteout Valley. They were run by the forebear of The Enigmansion before his passing, and are rendered operational again when Mario uses the Paperize ability on the forebear's portrait, bringing it to life. While riding it, Mario can swing back and forth to collect coins and avoid the Fuzzies that drop from the rails. Luigi can be seen riding one in the background at one point, and can be plucked out via Paperization.
