Template:Species-infobox Moonsnakes (formerly known as Spike Bars) are obstacles that first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They are similar to Fire Bars, but have spiked balls in place of fireballs and can usually be destroyed by means of a Statue Leaf or Lucky Bell, whereas Fire Bars are completely indestructible. They can inflict damage on the player, causing them to lose a power-up form, shrink down in size or lose a life.

History

A Spike Bar
A Moonsnake in World 5-3 ofSuper Mario 3D Land.

Super Mario 3D Land

Contrary to Fire Bars, which mostly appear in only lava-themed levels, Spike Bars are found in a multitude of levels throughout the game. As with Fire Bars, there can be two Spike Bars rotating around the same axis, though unlike Fire Bars, there are no varieties of Spike Bar which rotate on their side or have more than two bars rotating around the same axis. They will break if they come into contact with Mario or Luigi in their statue forms, releasing several coins.

Super Mario 3D World

Spike Bars return in Super Mario 3D World, though their appearance has changed; they now look more like spiked rollers rolling around a center than Fire Bars. Also, they are only seen with two or four bars rotating around the same axis. Spike Bars are found only in World Castle-4 and World Mushroom-7. Additionally, Spikes attack by producing unattached Spike Bars and throwing them forward, which roll down the path in front of them. Other individual Spike Bars can also be found rolling on pendulum platforms, or swinging back and forth via two chains.

All Spike Bar varieties can be destroyed by Mario and his company if they assume the Lucky Cat form.

Super Mario Run

Spike Bars return in Super Mario Run as obstacles in the level Spike Bar Jungle, and are designed to look closer to their original appearance from Super Mario 3D Land. Albeit indestructible in this game, Spike Bars can be bounced on safely by Yoshis.

Super Mario Odyssey

Moonsnakes, now referred to as such, return in Super Mario Odyssey in the Seaside Kingdom.
