A Rip Van Fish is a sleeping variety of Cheep Cheep found in Super Mario World. Rip Van Fish is named after the literary character Rip Van Winkle, who fell asleep for twenty years. If Mario swims too close to a Rip Van Fish, it will awaken and begin to chase Mario. The fish will pursue Mario until the plumber can put significant distance between them. If Mario escapes, the fish will go back to sleep. However, if Mario is invincible, they will do the opposite and flee from him.

Rip Van Fish can also be awakened by the whistle of a Chargin' Chuck in Forest of Illusion 2. Whereas Mario can only awaken one fish at a time, the whistle can awaken all the fish in an area.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

The Rip Van Fish reappear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, but marks a very shorter appearence in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, and only appear in level 15 of the World-e in the e-Reader and attack like they did in Super Mario World. They appear when Mario is swimming with the Frog Suit.

The Rip Van Fish of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island differ from their Super Mario World counterparts by having different facial and by never sleeping.
