Valentina, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Dodo is Valentina's assistant and a minor recurring boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the Switch version. Although Dodo has to put up with Valentina's physical and verbal abuse, he remains loyal to her until the end (his Monster List entry in the remake states that this is due to him feeling indebted to her for raising him as a child), and merely vents his repressed anger by pecking the golden statues of his boss that he is supposed to polish. His name comes from the extinct dodo, which are generally depicted as being fat and simple-minded in fiction.

History[edit]

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Dodo battling Bowser

Dodo is a vital member of Valentina's plan to take over Nimbus Land. Dodo is tasked to impersonate Prince Mallow, the long lost heir to the Nimbus Land throne. Although Dodo is obviously a large bird, he fools the populace of Nimbus Land into thinking he is actually the prince. During the coup, he "proposes" to Valentina, thus allowing her to legally become queen.

When Garro brings a statue of Valentina and Mario disguised as a golden statue inside Nimbus Castle, Valentina demands Dodo to carry and display them. After she leaves, he pecks a statue of Valentina in anger before doing the task. Valentina then demands that he polish the statues. During this, Mario must avoid being pecked by him. If Mario successfully fools him, he earns the Feather, which can increase his speed. If he fails twice, Mario must fight Dodo.

Mario and company eventually reach the throne room and find Valentina, Dodo, and a Beezo there. When Dodo points out Mario is in the room with them to Valentina, all three flee. Since Dodo is not a fast runner, Mario can eventually catch up and fight him. Alternatively, Mario can grab a Super Star and become invincible, allowing him to simply run into Dodo to defeat him. If Mario speaks to one of the Nimbus guards in front of the hot springs after he falls down, the guard informs him that Dodo is bathing there.

At the start of the battle with Valentina, Dodo takes away the middle party member and fights them on their own. If this lone party member loses, the game ends. After enough damage is dealt, Dodo flees and the lone party member chases after him. They eventually return and rejoin their respective sides. When Valentina takes enough damage, Dodo grabs her and the two fly away.

During the ending, Dodo is seen presiding over Valentina's marriage with Booster in Marrymore.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Valentina and Dodo
Valentina and Dodo in the Super Mario-kun manga

Dodo appears with Valentina in Super Mario-kun in chapter 13 of volume 51, where he looks small compared to his game appearance. He does not play any important role beside following Valentina around. His only role in the story is to be used as a shield by Valentina to avoid a stomp from Mario, which causes him to land crotch-first on his beak and get hurt.

  • Player's Guide (Who's Who): Too lazy to lift a wing, this flightless fool has settled for a comfy life in Nimbus Castle. Much as he hates Valentina's bossing him around, Dodo dreads the thought of getting a real job even more. Ruffle his feathers, though, and he turns into a ferocious opponent![1]
