Crowns are objects seen in some games to indicate the winner of a previous round or the leader of the current one.

History

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Crowns first appear in Super Mario 3D World and reappear in its Nintendo Switch port, where the player in first place in score at the end of a level will gain the crown for the next level. Crowns can be knocked off players as well, whether by enemies or other players, and give an additional 5,000 points to players in possession of the crown at the end of a level.

If multiple players are tied for first place at the end of the level, nobody will receive a crown.

Mario Kart series

Mario Kart 8

The crown make its Mario Kart debut in Mario Kart 8. Here, it appears on top of the current front runners mini-map icon, and it also appears on the first-place player mini-map icon in Battle Mode.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, crowns return, though they have been entirely revamped. Their ability to appear as a mini-map icon in regular races was removed. In Battle Mode, they are now physically placed on the head(s) of (a) first-place driver(s). They were also redesigned, the crowns are now more detailed, the mini-map sprite was redone, and in races they have a Shine Sprite figure on the top, except when Larry, Lemmy, or Iggy wears it, in which case there is a hole on the top instead to make room for the tall hair of these characters. A brief sound effect was added when a player obtains it. The crown now serves as the prize for winning Battle Mode, replacing the generic trophies reused from the VS. mode in the Wii U version. On the ranking results screen, free-for-all results show the normal gold crown, a silver crown, or a bronze crown for first, second, or third place, respectively, and team-based battles using the gold crown to indicate the winning team. Just like trophies, crowns that appear on the results screen automatically rotate horizontally, with the player being able to use the control stick or touchscreen to speed crowns up, slow them down, or tilt them up or down. Additionally, in lobbies for online, local wireless, or LAN play, the Mii of the winner of the previous race now wears a crown if they won the last battle.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

A crown appears in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports at the end of the level Mummy-Me Maze Forever. The level ends once the crown is collected, and Captain Toad and Toadette wear it permanently afterwards.
