Egg Pawns are a crossover species from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and one of Dr. Eggman's many creations. Egg Pawns in the Super Mario franchise appear only in the Mario & Sonic series, most commonly as obstacles in Dream Events, but later installments use Egg Pawns as extra team members in certain events that require larger team sizes.

History

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Egg Pawns first appear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In the Wii version, Egg Pawns appear in Dream Race, where a pair of them appear as obstacles on the track moving at a slow speed. When the player collides with them, the Egg Pawns will explode and cause the character to be temporarily stunned lose speed, though the Egg Pawns will shortly respawn.

In the Nintendo DS version, regular Egg Pawns appear as targets in Dream Shooting, as well as a variety with a shield that take multiple shots to destroy. A giant Egg Pawn with a shield acts as a final boss for the event, which takes a large number of hits for the characters to defeat but awards a larger point score to the character that gets the last hit. Egg Pawns also appear as enemies for the player to hit in Shoot!, and as a character to be sorted in Conveyor Belt.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Egg Pawns appear as basic obstacles in both the Individual and Team versions of Dream Alpine and the Individual and Team versions of Dream Snowboard Cross, where they cause the player to fall over and lose speed when hit. The Egg Pawns can be destroyed if they hit by a character under the effects of the Super Star. Egg Pawns also appear in the second segment of the Sonic World version of Dream Figure Skating, where the characters jump from Springs to defeat them during the routine.

In the Nintendo DS version, Egg Pawns appear in Extreme Snowboarding, serving the same purpose as in the Wii version.

Characters will lose some of their health if they are hit by the Egg Pawns, however they can be defeated by a single thrust. A Mii outfit based on an Egg Pawn can also be unlocked.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, Egg Pawns appear in Handball, where they throw the balls at the goal which the player must defend, and Football, where one appears as the goalie and another appears as a defender depending on the player's performance. In the game's Story Mode, an Egg Pawn appears in the bonus episode Junior, Super Hero?, where it initially appears attacking Omochao and a Chao with an Egg Flapper, but is defeated by Bowser Jr. A badge of an Egg Pawn can also be obtained from the badge machine.
