Events are a type of minigame based on real life Olympic events that appear in the Mario & Sonic series. The events fall into various categories, such as Gymnastics and Aquatics, and usually end up ranking the players from 1st to 8th or 4th, depending on the installment, with the top three winning gold, silver and bronze medals. Dream Events are also featured in the earlier games, which are loosely based on regular Olympic events, but take place in various locations from the Mario and Sonic series and often use and items. Duel Events were introduced in the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which function similarly to Dream Events but instead take place in regular locations and focus on point scoring. Plus Events were introduced in the Nintendo 3DS installment of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, also similar to dream events, but use items and obstacles from the two series as enhancements of the existing events.
