- “I SAID SQUEEEEK!”
- —Scaredy Rat, Paper Mario: Color Splash
A Scaredy Rat is a white rat creature that first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They appear to have black sclera, red pupils, orange feet and huge buck teeth. Their name is a pun on the term scaredy cat, which is a childish term for a coward.
History
Super Mario series
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Scaredy Rats first appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii where they are only found in World 4-Ghost House. They are defeated the same way that Goombas are. However, the difference between the two is that Scaredy Rats are troublesome and run quite fast. When Mario or a teammate approaches, they stop scuttling and start jumping in place. When the player leaves, the Scaredy Rats continue scuttling. If one is stomped, all nearby Scaredy Rats will run in panic. However, if running Scaredy Rats encounter a calm rat, the frightened rats will become calm as well.
New Super Mario Bros. U
Scaredy Rats reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U with the same features of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They appear in the level Which-Way Labyrinth, where in dark sections their eyes shine like a Swoop. They are one of the few enemies that do not reappear in New Super Luigi U.
Super Mario Run
Scaredy Rats reappear in Super Mario Run, only in the level Scaredy Rat Race. They behave identical to their appearance in previous platformers.
Mario Party series
Mario Party 9
A Scaredy Rat appears in a Captain Event known as Scaredy Rat Race in the portal-like tower near the final area of the board Boo's Horror Castle. The Scaredy Rat steals some Mini Stars from each player and scuttles each turn some spaces ahead using a dice block. The current captain has to choose a player who must roll a Dice Block. The player who actually reaches the Scaredy Rat defeats it and receives all the Mini Stars the Scaredy Rat has stolen.
Mario Party: Island Tour
A Scaredy Rat can be seen on the Banzai Bill's Mad Mountain board in Mario Party: Island Tour. They also appear in the minigame Rat-a-tat Flat, which involves players having to Ground Pound the Scaredy Rats that appear to earn points. Gold Scaredy Rats also appear in the minigame.
Paper Mario series
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Scaredy Rats make their Paper Mario debut in the Nintendo 3DS game Paper Mario: Sticker Star as enemies in The Enigmansion of World 4. They maintain their appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In battle, Scaredy Rats can do two attacks. For one, they can attack by ramming Mario while squeaking. This attack may throw off timing. Because of this, they will jump two times and it can either ram into Mario quickly or one second later. It is impossible to tell when it is going to ram into Mario, as this attack is very fast, but if their attack misses or is dodged with correct timing, they will roll over. For their other attack, if a Scaredy Rat runs in place before attacking, it will steal one of Mario's stickers. Mario can get his sticker back by damaging or defeating the a Scaredy Rat before it flees with the sticker. Blocking this attack will prevent damage, does not prevent the Scaredy Rat from stealing the sticker; instead, Mario will lose one of his lower-damage stickers. If a Scaredy Rat thinks Mario has no stickers or has already stolen one from Mario without turning, they will instead ram him. In rare cases, a Scaredy Rat may turn around before fleeing with the sticker giving Mario a chance to get it back.
Spinies, Snifits, and Hammer Bros. are the other enemies in this game that can throw off timing.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Scaredy Rats return in Paper Mario: Color Splash with the same appearance and behavior they had in Paper Mario: Sticker Star and can be fought in Marmalade Valley, Dark Bloo Inn and Toad Trainworks. There is a Scaredy Rat 10-Stack in Toad Trainworks.

Scaredy Rats make a return in Paper Mario: The Origami King, with origami variants of them acting as enemies.[1]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
A Scaredy Rat sets off the plot of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam by scaring Luigi into knocking over a book containing the Paper Mario universe. Later in the game, only Paper Scaredy Rats appear as enemies. They appear only in the Twinsy Tropics Dungeon.
