One of the seven [[Star Piece (Super Mario RPG)|Star Piece]]s is said to have crashed into the ocean, where it was later recovered by Johnny and his pirates. When [[Mario]] arrives to claim the Star Piece for the [[elder]] of Seaside Town, Johnny states that he will only hand over the relic if Mario and his allies can defeat him in battle. The pirate leader starts the fight with four [[Bandana Blue]]s assisting him. If the party defeats all of the Bandana Blues, Johnny challenges Mario to a one-on-one duel. Additionally, after his [[Heart Point|HP]] drops below half, Johnny uses [[Get Tough]], causing his skin to turn red and increasing his attack and defense for the rest of the battle. When Johnny is defeated, he befriends Mario and hands him the Star Piece.

==History==
When [[Speardovich]] tries to escape with the Star Piece, Johnny appears with some of his crew to block his exit as he attempts to jump into the water, forcing him to battle Mario and his party. After Speardovich is defeated, a note left by Johnny can be seen on a tree, explaining that he was unable to watch because his gills would not allow him to stay outside the water any longer, but that he is sure that Mario was able to easily defeat Speardovich. The note also states that his crew saw [[The Blade|a flying ax]] in the sky, which he is certain is related to the [[Smithy Gang]].

During the events of ''Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars'', one of the seven [[Star Piece (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)|Star Pieces]] crashed into the ocean, and was later recovered by Jonathan Jones and his pirates. When [[Mario]] arrives to claim the Star Piece for the [[Town Elder|Elder of Seaside Town]], Johnny states he will only hand the relic over if Mario and his allies can defeat him in battle. The pirate leader starts the fight with four Bandana Blues for protection. After his bodyguards are defeated, Johnny challenges Mario to a one-on-one duel. Alternatively, if Mario left at least one Bandana Blue alive, Mario would not have to enter the one-on-one battle. Mario is eventually able to defeat Jonathan, who then respectfully gives Mario the Star Piece.

When Mario returns to Seaside Town, it is revealed that the Town Elder was in fact Smithy's lieutenant [[Yaridovich]] in disguise. Mario is forced to hand over the Star Piece, and Yaridovich runs to the coast to be picked up by the [[Axem Rangers]]. However, the rangers were running late, so Yaridovich decided to swim away (even though he would rust). Before he can reach the water, Johnathan Jones and his pirate crew block his exit, forcing him into a confrontation with Mario (Jones himself does not participate in the fight, as he can not stay out of water for long amounts of time). Yardivoch was destroyed by Mario, and after word of farewell Johnathan returns to the Sunken Ship.
During the ending sequence, Johnny appears on the cliff where the Speardovich battle took place, gazing out onto the sunset. He and Bandana Reds are also seen on a float based on the Sunken Ship (moved by [[King Calamari]]'s tentacles) during the ending parade.

Jonathan Jones was last seen during ''Super Mario RPG''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s ending sequence, where he was shown standing on the cliff on which the Yaridovich battle took place, gazing out onto the [[sun|sunset]]. He and his Bandana Reds also operated a float based on the Sunken Ship (moved by [[King Calamari]]'s tentacles) during the ending parade, and this float was notable for being the first to be affected by nightfall and the glitter released by a [[Star (species)|Star]] (possibly [[Geno|♥♪!?]]).
In the Nintendo Switch remake, Johnny returns with a post-game rematch, where he is called '''Duel-Ready Johnny'''. For the entire battle, Mario and Johnny fight one-on-one, and Mario is unable to use items. After the rematch, he rewards Mario with the [[Extra-Shiny Stone]], which allows Mario to rematch [[Culex]].

Johnny, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Jonathan Jones, known to his friends as Johnny, is the leader of a band of pirate sharks in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Nintendo Switch remake. Though he appears to be a shark, a pair of glowing yellow eyes can be seen within his "mouth," suggesting he may be wearing a shark costume instead. His base of operations is the Sunken Ship near Seaside Town; he is known as the "most notorious pirate ever to roam" the Seaside region.[1] Johnny's weapon of choice is a trident, which he uses to skewer his opponents. Although Johnny is a pirate, he has a strict code of honor and will be loyal to anyone who can defeat him in battle.

One of the seven Star Pieces is said to have crashed into the ocean, where it was later recovered by Johnny and his pirates. When Mario arrives to claim the Star Piece for the elder of Seaside Town, Johnny states that he will only hand over the relic if Mario and his allies can defeat him in battle. The pirate leader starts the fight with four Bandana Blues assisting him. If the party defeats all of the Bandana Blues, Johnny challenges Mario to a one-on-one duel. Additionally, after his HP drops below half, Johnny uses Get Tough, causing his skin to turn red and increasing his attack and defense for the rest of the battle. When Johnny is defeated, he befriends Mario and hands him the Star Piece.

When Speardovich tries to escape with the Star Piece, Johnny appears with some of his crew to block his exit as he attempts to jump into the water, forcing him to battle Mario and his party. After Speardovich is defeated, a note left by Johnny can be seen on a tree, explaining that he was unable to watch because his gills would not allow him to stay outside the water any longer, but that he is sure that Mario was able to easily defeat Speardovich. The note also states that his crew saw a flying ax in the sky, which he is certain is related to the Smithy Gang.

During the ending sequence, Johnny appears on the cliff where the Speardovich battle took place, gazing out onto the sunset. He and Bandana Reds are also seen on a float based on the Sunken Ship (moved by King Calamari's tentacles) during the ending parade.

In the Nintendo Switch remake, Johnny returns with a post-game rematch, where he is called Duel-Ready Johnny. For the entire battle, Mario and Johnny fight one-on-one, and Mario is unable to use items. After the rematch, he rewards Mario with the Extra-Shiny Stone, which allows Mario to rematch Culex.
