Fawful (Also called Lord Fawful by his minions) is an eccentric Beanish character who is a recurring antagonist in the Mario & Luigi series. He is notable for speaking in grammatically incorrect English and making obscure food metaphors (e.g. "And this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom!"). Fawful is a mechanical genius, but his common sense suffers due to his extreme rage which often causes him to act in a delusional manner.

Fawful (also known as Lord Fawful to his minions) is a Beanish character and a major antagonist in the Mario & Luigi series. He is the secondary antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake, and the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake. He is notable for speaking in broken English and making many food-based metaphors. Fawful is highly intelligent, but he suffers from extreme fits of anger. His name comes from the words "guffaw" (a term that refers to powerful laughter) and "awful".

Though his past is largely unknown, Fawful is implied to have been a long-time follower of Cackletta prior to the events of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake. He is the secondary antagonist of the game.

During the introductory scene, Fawful accompanies Cackletta, who is disguised as the Goodwill Ambassador from the Beanbean Kingdom, to aid her in stealing Princess Peach's voice to awaken the Beanstar. While returning to the Beanbean Kingdom, they are pursued by Mario, Luigi, and Bowser, who had formed a temporary alliance to stop them. Fawful knocks Bowser out and fights the Mario Bros., who destroy his Vacuum Helmet. After it breaks, Fawful summons another Vacuum Helmet to knock Bowser's Koopa Cruiser out of the sky before departing. He is later hinted by Beanbean guards to have kidnapped Prince Peasley, after they wrongly accused Mario and Luigi of doing so. When the brothers arrive at Hoohoo Mountain, he blocks their path with a large stone and flies off. He later appears in Beanbean Castle, where he steals the Beanstar alongside Cackletta and feeds Queen Bean a Belly Blech worm to distract the Bros.

The two then go to Woohoo Hooniversity, where they plan to awaken the Beanstar using several Peach-bots, which Fawful had designed. However, due to some planning on the princess's part, the voice used is that of Birdo, which causes the Beanstar to become irritated and break through the floor. Shortly afterward, the Mario Bros. arrive, and before Fawful can do anything, Luigi knocks him into the ground. After hitting him, they defeat Cackletta. Fawful soon recovers and sucks Cackletta's energy into his Vacuum Helmet. Before he can attack the brothers again, he is sent flying through the roof by Prince Peasley. Landing in Stardust Fields, Fawful finds an unconscious Bowser, who he gives to Cackletta to possess. Cackletta proceeds to call herself Bowletta, and Fawful accompanies her to Little Fungitown, where they abduct the princess.

The Mario Bros. later encounter Fawful at Joke's End under the pretense of exchanging the Beanstar (which they use a replica of) for Peach. Fawful recognizes this, however, and takes the real one as well as Princess Peach, escaping on the repaired Koopa Cruiser. However, the Princess Peach they abduct is actually Luigi in disguise, and Luigi utilizes the pair's shock to retrieve the Beanstar and escape. Fawful then goes with Cackletta to Bowser's Castle, where they plan to destroy both the Mushroom and Beanbean Kingdoms.

Fawful is encountered in Bowser's Castle as the penultimate boss, wearing a pink outfit with a wing-like cloth under his arms and a large V-neck, with a large antenna replacing his hair. He can attack the Mario Bros. with a large ship that resembles his head. After his defeat, he tries making a final attack to defeat the Bros., but gets into a fight with Prince Peasley and is knocked out of the castle before Mario and Luigi engage with Cackletta and her soul, the latter of which makes a copy of Fawful as one of her attacks. This copy of Fawful attacks similarly to how he does in his first battle.

During the second fight with Fawful in Bowser's Castle, Popple's battle theme plays instead of the normal boss theme. This is replaced with Cackletta's battle theme in the Japanese version and in the 3DS remake, as this theme is intended to be shared by Cackletta and Fawful, being a combination of their overworld themes and being titled "Fawful and Cackletta" in the remake.

Fawful appears as the main antagonist in the remake's new mode, Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser. He intends to enslave Bowser and work him to death, although Bowser manages to escape from him. Fawful then proceeds to brainwash the Koopalings into trying to conquer the Beanbean Kingdom to rescue Bowser.

As the captains make their way to Joke's End to find the Koopa Cruiser, Fawful tells them that he took over Bowser's Castle, and that Bowser himself is "no longer a thing of this world". The captains encounter Fawful at Bowser's Castle, and although he taunts them, they defeat him and make their way to Bowser's chamber, where Bowser immediately tells Captain Goomba to "destroy" Mario. After a while, it is revealed that "Bowser" was actually Bowletta in disguise, and when Captain Goomba confronts them about this, she and Fawful use a trapdoor to send the captains into a dungeon, which turns out to be a Mecha-Fawful factory. After a long final battle, the minions defeat Fawful one last time and escape the dungeon.
Though his past is largely unknown, Fawful is inferred to have been a long-time follower of Cackletta prior to the events of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and names himself as a pupil of hers in-game. He is officially confirmed to have gained his status as the greatest of Cackletta's students through his evil genius.

Fawful accompanied Cackletta to the Mushroom Kingdom, where he aided her in stealing the Princess's voice. While the two were on their way to the Beanbean Kingdom they encountered the Mario Bros. and Bowser who had formed a temporary alliance to stop the two villains. Taking care of Bowser, Fawful attacked the Mario Brothers. During the battle, Fawful shoots green fire balls at the Mario Bros. In order to avoid the attack, the player must look at the color of the text when he called the bros., "Fink Rats". If the text is red, he will shoot at Mario and if the text is green he will shoot at Luigi. After giving Fawful a certain amount of damage, the Bros. destroyed Fawful's Headgear and then beat him. Unfortunately, Fawful summoned another Headgear and used it to knock Bowser's Koopa Cruiser out of the sky. Fawful appeared again attacking Beanbean guards in the mountains. When Mario and Luigi encountered him, he summoned a large stone to block their path.

Fawful reappears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, now wearing a white skin-tight outfit. He acts as the shopkeeper of Fawful's Bean 'n' Badge located in the sewers of Peach's Castle, and only Baby Mario and Baby Luigi can access the shop. While Fawful does not completely recognize the two as younger versions of Mario and Luigi, he says they seem familiar to him. Fawful then says a long speech about how the brothers defeated him in the previous game, mentioning that he plans to return in the future and create a time in which "no baby's candy will have safety". This foreshadows his role as the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

He later appears in Beanbean Castle, stealing the Beanstar along with Cackletta. After Cackletta tricks Mario and Luigi into fixing the castle's plumbing breaking the barrier around the Beanstar, he makes his getaway along with Cackletta, force-feeding Queen Bean a Belly Belch Worm to take care of the Mario Bros.
After his speech, Fawful sells rare badges to the baby Mario Bros. in exchange for beans. Additionally, he hints that the babies should go to Peach's Castle's viewing platform prior to them discovering the Gritzy Desert.
br

Fawful attacked Woohoo Hooniversity with Cackletta; it was there that they planned to awaken the Beanstar with Princess Peach's voice. The plan didn't work out so well; it seemed the Princess was aware of the villains' plan and had gone into hiding, and the Princess whose voice had been stolen was Birdo. Birdo's squawking voice irritated the Beanstar so much it smashed through the floor and then the Mario Bros. showed up. The Bros. took out Fawful and then fought Cackletta who they defeated and crippled. Fawful sucked his mistress's energy into his Headgear and planned to attack the Mario Bros., only to be stopped and flung through the roof by Prince Peasley. Landing in Stardust Fields, Fawful found an unconscious Bowser whose body Cackletta possessed. Cackletta then began to call herself Bowletta.

Fawful appears as the main antagonist in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake. He began the outbreak of the blorbs by selling "Blorb Mushrooms" to the citizens of Toad Town. Fawful then brainwashes Bowser's minions to have them invade the Mushroom Kingdom. His true plan is to acquire the Dark Star, an ancient evil artifact, and use its power to kill the Mario Bros. and their friends.

He later appears in Little Fungitown with Bowletta, saying that while she has the body of Bowser, she still has the mind of Cackletta. He flies away along with Bowletta in her Koopa Cruiser, having kidnapped Princess Peach.

Fawful is first seen in Dimble Wood disguised as a merchant. He sells Bowser, who had just been defeated by Mario, a Vacuum Shroom, advertising it as a "Lucky (?) Shroom" that will help Bowser defeat his enemies. Instead, it causes Bowser to inhale everything around him, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Starlow, and the other Mushroom Kingdom citizens who attended the meeting.

Fawful appeared again guarding Joke's End where he stole the Beanstar from Luigi after seeing through a fake one. Like Bowletta, Fawful was fooled by Luigi pretending to be the Princess and as a result, the plumber was able to steal back the Beanstar.
Bowser later finds Fawful in Cavi Cape, where the villain reveals that he has captured Bowser's Castle. He then sends Midbus to battle Bowser, and during the fight, he attempts to teach Midbus on how to dodge Bowser's attacks, being descriptive enough that he inadvertently helps Bowser. He then has Bowser fight the Sea Pipe Statue, only to later tell Bowser that he has captured his minions.

Fawful showed up again as the penultimate boss in Bowser's Castle. Fawful, here suited in a skin-tight pink suit with wing-like cloth under its arms, now had a large mecha that looked like his head. Fawful is actually surprisingly faster than his mecha. If he hadn't took any damage, he will shoot laser bolts from his antenna at the hero, looking to see where the shadow is reveals who it is going to hit. His mecha could use an eye laser attack. Also when the mecha gets hit 4 times, Fawful gets enraged and spins around shooting laser bolts at the heros for them to counter with a Hammer before swinging the remaining ones at the bros. for them to Jump over. Then it will overheat causing Fawful to stay out of the mecha for 3 turns. This is the only way to damage Fawful besides countering his attacks which do a miniscule amount of damage. After he gets hurt, he adds some more attacks in his possesions like charging a laser beam while putting a fawful block over the hero's heads, so the heros has to rapidly jump to break them. Then the laser beam will sweep forwards and backwards 3 times. Another is charging at the bros. The player will have to hit his BODY to counter. He flaps his right arm when attacking Mario and keeps it still at Luigi. Also if hurt a lot, he will repeatedly attack until he is countered or the intended bro. faints. Also when Fawful is hurt more, the mecha's eyebeams will go more times. After beating him in battle, Fawful tried one last ditch effort to beat the Mario Bros., but only ended up being knocked out of the castle by Luigi, leaving the Bros. only Bowletta to contend with. An apparition resembling Fawful reappears as one of Cackletta's attacks in the final battle, which would imply that he is dead; however, future events seem to prove that this is not the real Fawful.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Fawful then turns Bowser's Castle into Fawful Theater, where he performs on stage to Bowser's minions, who have been brainwashed. Fawful arranges a VIP seat for Bowser and, when he falls for Fawful's latest plot, Bowser is catapulted onto the stage, where Fawful has Midbus fight him in a cage match. Bowser defeats Midbus and eats a "Victory Feast" Fawful presents him with, which causes him to become bloated and get stuck in the floor. It is implied afterward that Fawful did this in order to draw Princess Peach out of Bowser's body and kidnap her.
I have boredom... Guests? Now I have... FURY!

Fawful appears later in the basement under Bowser, using his ray gun to remove Princess Peach from Bowser's body, claiming that his plans have changed, and he needs her. Princess Peach tells the Mario Bros. that she thinks Fawful is after the Dark Star, an ancient entity put to sleep under Toad Town, with the only person who can break its seal being her. After extracting Peach from Bowser's body, Fawful struggles to hold Princess Peach, showing his lack of physical strength. Midbus places a treadmill under Bowser, causing him to burn off the fat he gained which lights him ablaze and ignites the nearby Bob-ombs, launching him out of the castle.
Fawful appears again in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time; this time not an antagonist, but a shopkeeper running a shop called Fawful's Bean 'n' Badge that is located in the sewers of Princess Peach's Castle. He is only encountered by the babies, whom he does not completely recognize as the younger versions of Mario and Luigi. He sells them some of the most excellent badges in the game in exchange for beans. Fawful goes on a long speech to them about how the brothers defeated him in the previous game, notably mentioning that he plans to return in the future (foreshadowing his major role in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story), creating a period of time in which "no baby's candy will have safety". He, demonstrating apparent clairvoyance, also suggests that the babies go to Princess Peach's Castle's viewing platform prior to the time they discover Gritzy Desert.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Bowser meet... FURY OF FAWFUL!
Fawful appears again under the Mushroom Kingdom to steal the Dark Star, which can give him the power to take over the kingdom. He proceeds to taunt the Mario Bros. and flies off to Peach's Castle. Mario and co. chase him but are stopped by a barrier made by the Dark Star.

Fawful and Midbus are found again inside the conquered Peach's castle, using a machine to suck the princess's energy out to break the Dark Star's seal. Midbus exclaims that with the Dark Star the world is theirs and Fawful scolds him, saying that hearing that stresses him out because they have not won just yet as the Dark Star still needs to be awoken. As they wait for the Dark Star to awaken, an alarm goes off because of Mario and Luigi's appearance outside the castle. Fawful, however, laughs at their "stupidity" and sends out a Fawfulcopter to tell them his plans. He then leaves saying that he is going shopping at the Toad Town Mall.
Fawful appears as the main antagonist in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. He began the outbreak of "Blorbs" by selling "Blorb Mushrooms" to the citizens of Toad Town. Fawful then uses special masks on enemies to put them under his control and has them invade the Mushroom Kingdom.

Fawful is first seen in Dimble Wood disguised as a merchant. He sells Bowser a Vacuum Mushroom, advertising it as a "Lucky Shroom" that will help the Koopa King defeat his enemies. Instead, it causes Bowser to inhale everything around him, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Starlow, and other Mushroom Kingdom citizens.
After beating Junker and learning the Spike Ball move, Bowser travels inside the castle, where he meets three Fawfulcopters which Fawful can communicate through. Fawful tells Bowser that he is shocked at how he made it to the castle, but then tells Bowser that each of the Fawfulcopters holds a key and Bowser has to catch the copters to get to the next rooms. Unable to break down the doors, Bowser must chase the Fawfulcopters to get to the next area.

Bowser later finds Fawful in Cavi Cape, where the villain reveals that he has captured Bowser's Castle. He then sends his brawny minion, Midbus to battle Bowser, and during the fight, he teaches both combatants how to fight. Sometimes in the game, Fawful will communicate to Bowser with a Fawfulcopter to manipulate his actions. He has Bowser fight the Sea Pipe Statue, only to later tell the victorious Koopa King that he has captured his minions.
After getting the keys and going through other obstacles, Bowser is shot into the sky where he meets two giant Piranha Plants. However, Bowser falls back down shortly after and lands at the top of Peach's Castle, where the three Fawfulcopters from before talk to Bowser, laughing at him because he could not fly or beat the Piranha Plants. The Fawfulcopters then leave and make Bowser destroy the Piranha Plants.

Fawful then turns Bowser's Castle into Fawful Theater, where he performs on stage to Bowser's minions, who were under his control. Fawful arranges a VIP seat for Bowser, and when he falls for the Bean's latest plot, the Koopa King is catapulted onto the stage, where Fawful has Midbus fight him in a cage match. Bowser beats Midbus, but he soon falls for Fawful's next trap by eating the "Victory feast" his nemesis presents him with, which causes him to become bloated and get stuck in the floor.

Fawful is once again seen in the room with the machine that sucks Peach's power into the Dark Star. The Dark Star had not yet awoken when Bowser came into the room. Hating his timing, Fawful decides to help Midbus fight to stall for time but changes his mind because of Midbus's pride. Instead, he powers up Midbus with his laser gun to make him become Blizzard Midbus, whom Bowser fights. After beating him, Midbus turns into an ice cube, leaving Fawful alone to carry out his plans. At that time, the Dark Star becomes fully awakened, and Fawful rushes over and drains its power. Bowser punches Fawful away before he absorbs all the star's power, and the Dark Star flies into Bowser's body.

Fawful appears again in the basement under Bowser. He uses his ray gun to extract Princess Peach from Bowser's body. When holding the princess, Fawful almost collapses, showing his lack of strength. Fawful's minion, Midbus then places a treadmill under Bowser, causing him to (literally) burn off fat.
Fawful appears again outside of Peach's Castle as Dark Fawful, where he looks for the Dark Star. Bowser tries to confront him, but Dark Fawful, furious at Bowser for interrupting his draining of the dark power, powers up the castle to become Super Peach's Castle of Fury. The giant robot castle crushes Bowser, causing the Mario Bros. inside his body to have to revive him and fight the fourth and final giant battle.

He appears again under the Mushroom Kingdom stealing the Dark Star, which can give him the power to destroy the kingdom. At that point, the Mario Bros. realize that it is too late to stop him. After taunting the heroes, Fawful flies off to Peach's castle. Mario and co. chase him but are stopped by a barrier made by the Dark Star. The only way the Mario Bros. could break it is to get the Miracle Cure.
After demolishing the castle, Bowser finds Dark Fawful in the castle's conference hall. Before the battle, Dark Fawful speaks like he did in Superstar Saga, showing that he is losing his composure and acting rashly out of anger. He also says how Bowser has gotten in his way just like Mario and Luigi (referring to Superstar Sagas events) and that he now hates him just as much as them, causing Bowser to become annoyed and tell Fawful not to compare him to Mario. Fawful makes further reference to Superstar Saga by referring to Bowser (and, indirectly, Mario and Luigi) as "fink rats" for the first time since that game. Despite his use of dark magic, Bowser manages to beat Dark Fawful, he collapses into a bug-like form known as the Dark Fawful Bug and tries to escape, but gets inhaled by Dark Bowser, causing the completion of the Dark Power and fusing Fawful with the Dark Star Core.

Fawful, along with Midbus is found again inside Peach's castle, which he had taken over earlier. They are seen with a machine that sucks the princess's power and brings it to the Dark Star. As they wait for the Dark Star to awaken, an alarm goes off because of Mario and Luigi's appearance outside the castle. Fawful, however, laughs at their "Stupidity" and sends out a Fawfulcopter to speak to the bros. and tells them his plans. He then leaves saying that he is going shopping at the Toad Town Mall.
During the final battle, Bowser makes Dark Bowser spit out the Dark Fawful Bug, and then inhales it so that Mario and Luigi can beat both the Dark Fawful Bug and the Dark Star Core, the latter of which Fawful had fused with. Fawful uses the power of the Dark Star Core to grow into a giant monster and finally engages the brothers in a rematch to decide the fate of the kingdom. They succeed in destroying both, thus weakening Dark Bowser enough for Bowser to deliver the final blows and destroy him.

Later, Mario and Luigi create the Miracle Cure, which breaks the blockade in front of Peach's castle. With the Marios inside of him, Bowser travels inside the castle where he meets three Fawfulcopters which Fawful can communicate through. Fawful admits to Bowser that he is "Shocked" at how he made it to the castle. However, that doesn't stop him from making another scheme. Fawful explains to Bowser that each of the Fawfulcopters hold a key and Bowser has to catch the copters to get to important rooms. Unable to break down the doors, Bowser must chase the Fawfulcopters to get to the next area.
Inside Bowser, a highly unstable Dark Fawful makes his last appearance, lamenting of how Mario and Luigi will always show up and get in the way of his grand plans, no matter how hard he tries. Fawful then claims to be remorseful for his actions and that he will make himself disappear forever, though this is a lie and he blows himself up in one last-ditch attempt to take the Bros. with him while their guards are down. However, the explosion instead frees them from Bowser and seemingly cancels the effect of the Vacuum Shroom, undoing everything it had caused. The Mushroom Kingdom is then gradually restored to its former glory over the course of the credits.

Bowser Jr.'s Journey
Fawful has the same role in the game's remake, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, during the main story, although he also has a minor role in the alternate game mode Bowser Jr.'s Journey, being the one in charge of the three primary villains of that mode, the Best Fitness Friends. It is also implied in that mode that he had a hand in Bowser not being invited to the emergency meeting for the Blorbs outbreak at Peach's Castle. He is first seen watching Bowser leave his castle to go to the meeting, when he orders the Best Fitness Friends to infiltrate Bowser's Castle while he and Midbus go to capture Bowser. Later, Fawful speaks with Midbus and Dieter outside his shop, where he just obtained the Vacuum Shroom, planning to use it on Bowser. Although Fawful is mentioned a few times after this, he does not physically appear for the rest of the game.
right

After getting the keys and going through other obstacles, Bowser will be shot into the sky and meet two giant Piranha Plants. However, Bowser falls back down and lands in the very top of Peach's Castle and the three Fawfulcopters seen earlier talk to Bowser, laughing at him because he can't fly, let alone destroy the giant piranha plants raised by Fawful. The Fawfulcopters then leave and make Bowser overcome more obstacles.
Super Mario-kun
With the absence of a Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga arc, Fawful appears in the Super Mario-kun manga only in the Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story story arc, in volumes 40 and 41. He has different motivations in the manga: while in the games he also wants to get revenge on who defeated him in the past, in the manga, he is a typical mad scientist who aims to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, with no personal agenda against Mario and his friends.

Fawful is once again seen in the room with the machine that sucks Peach's power into the Dark Star. The evil star had finally awakened, but Bowser came in the room at that time. Hating his timing, Fawful decides to help Midbus fight, but changes his mind because of Midbus's "pride". Instead, he powers up Midbus with his laser gun to make him become Blizzard Midbus, whom Bowser fights. After beating him, Midbus's body turns into an ice cube, leaving Fawful alone to carry out his plans. At that time, the Dark Star becomes fully awakened and Fawful, stunned, rushes over and drains its power. Bowser, however, punches Fawful away before he has all the star's power. Afterwords, the Dark Star flies into Bowser's body.
Super Smash Bros. series
Fawful is referenced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where one of the names that can be generated from pressing the "RANDOM NAME" button is FWFUL, and in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the name "Fawful" may be generated via the same method.

Fawful appears as a neutral-type Advanced primary spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, using his artwork from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Fawful's spirit battle is against Iggy (representing Fawful) and a green R.O.B. (likely representing a Mechawful), on the Prism Tower stage. The music played in this battle is "The Grand Finale" from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. When equipped, the Fawful spirit gives an increase in power of electric attacks.
Fawful appears again  outside of Peach's castle, looking for the Dark Star. There, he was in his dark form with greater powers, a newer attire (most notably red glasses and a Cackletta-esque cloak), and a headgear that seemingly has a life of its own. Bowser confronts him but Fawful, always having a new plan, power ups the castle to become the Super Peach Castle. The giant castle crushes Bowser, making the Marios inside his body revive him to have another Giant Bowser Battle.

After beating the behemoth castle, Bowser finds Fawful in the castle's meeting room. The two villains begin to fight each other. Before the battle, Fawful speaks much like he did in Superstar Saga, even saying 'fink-rat' for the last time and also the only time in the game. He also speaks of how Mario & Luigi 'always show up' (refering to Superstar Saga's events). If Bowser and the Mario Bros. manage to beat Dark Fawful, he transforms himself into a second form to escape claiming he "has fury?", but gets inhaled by Dark Bowser.
General information
Appearance
Fawful is a Beanish character who wears eyeglasses, has a single strand of hair, and is often seen with a big grin. He is relatively the same height of both Mario and Luigi, sharing a lot in common with Professor E. Gadd. In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Fawful wears a red cloak with a ripped bottom and is commonly shown wearing his Vacuum Helmet on his head. His cloak hides most of his body, leaving only his head and legs visible. During his encounter in Bowser's Castle, he is seen with a pink, V-neck suit with a translucent, wing-like cloth that covers his arms and legs. He also has a bulbous antenna sticking out of his head, replacing his single-strand hair.

During the final battle, Bowser makes Dark Bowser spit out Dark Fawful, and then he inhales him so that Mario and Luigi have the final battle against Dark Fawful and the Dark Star inside Bowser's stomach. They ultimately succeed in destroying both, thus weakening Dark Bowser enough for Bowser to deliver the final blows and destroy him.
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Fawful is initially seen with a hooded cloak, though after Baby Mario and Baby Luigi hear his story about his past events in the previous game, he appears with a white suit and is shown to still have his bulbous antenna from the end of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Inside Bowser, Fawful makes his last appearance, speaking of how Mario & Luigi will always show up. In his final attempt to destroy the heroes, Fawful explodes, however he instead frees them from Bowser, undoing what started all the chaos in the first place. The Mushroom Kingdom returns to normal, thus bringing Fawful's reign to an end.
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Fawful no longer has his bulbous antenna and he wears a black suit with black gloves, a red belt and grey sandals, which are hidden underneath his red cape with a partially grey collar. Most of the time, he appears on a green, circular hovercraft. Once he transforms into Dark Fawful by absorbing some of the Dark Star's power, his glasses turn red and his cape separates, revealing his suit, which has become purple with a black star on it, and no longer features the belt, gloves, sleeves or sandals. His coat gains a purple-red color scheme, and the collar becomes maud and spiky in appearance. In this appearance, he wears a revamped Vacuum Helmet on his head for the majority of time spent in this form. After being defeated by Bowser, Fawful loses his green humanoid body and becomes a small black head (although he retains his red glasses and wide grin) that can switch between four bug-like legs and two claw arms (after being inhaled by Dark Bowser, his arm form also has an antenna with a small Dark Star Core at the end). During the final battle with Dark Bowser, Fawful uses the power of the Dark Star Core to transform into a giant form (relative to Mario and Luigi's size during the battle), retaining his black head and its features but now having two tentacle arms, each with a hand with three clawed fingers, and three tentacle legs protruding from below his head with the Dark Star Core attached to the top of his head by an antenna made of black electricity. After being beaten, he reverts back to his smaller size, now without any of his limbs and with some of his teeth missing.

Personality
Personality
There are multiple theories as to the origin of Fawful's name. One theory is that his name is based upon the word guffaw, which means "hearty laughter", something which Fawful engages in on numerous occasions. Another common theory is that his name is a pun of awful, upon which his personality is built. It could also be based on both. It could also be a word play with the food falafel, as many of the characters are named after bean based foods.
Fawful is shown to be very angry at times, but is also seen to be very devoted to Cackletta, whom he served with blind devotion in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and is considered to be Cackletta's "favorite subordinate" in a manner resembling the archetypical "Igor (character)" character. He is shown to be understanding of Midbus, who showed the same devotion to Fawful himself in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. He enjoys taunting his enemies and believes he is never wrong. While initially content to be Cackletta's subordinate, he is shown to be quite self-centered when he becomes his own villain, theming many of his minions based on his own likeness, turning Bowser's Castle into a self-aggrandizing theater filled with merchandise of himself, showboating before Bowser's brainwashed minions, and refacing many of the decorations in the places he conquers. Even prior to Cackletta's final defeat, however, Fawful briefly considers the possibility of rising beyond a "toady" of Cackletta's, though he ultimately is beaten before he has the chance to consider it further.

Fawful's extreme rage makes him a psychopath, often harming others without cause or sympathy ("Finally! Now is the time where my true might shines, like many angry sunbeams of rage!"). Fawful only cares for Cackletta in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and frantically helps her when she is hurt. Fawful delights in taunting his enemies before obliterating them ("Your lives that I spit on are now but a caricature of a cartoon drawn by a kid who is stupid!"). Fawful is quite deranged, he has several megalomaniac desires, and aspires to create great chaos in the world.
In Bowser's Inside Story, Fawful is shown to be manipulative, as he feigned defeat to Bowser and made a "victory feast" specifically to fatten him up and faked "acceptance" of defeat from Mario and Luigi at the end of the game to lower their guard for a surprise attack; additionally, in the remake's Bowser Jr.'s Journey, it is heavily implied that he had arranged for Bowser not to be invited to the emergency conference about the Blorbs in order to force a confrontation between the two parties.

Like Bowser, Fawful has many statues of himself, along with several Fawful merchandise sold to his minions. In Bowser's Inside Story, he takes over Bowser's castle and changes everything to represent himself, like a normal villain would do.  Also, according to Bowser, Fawful is a "prodigy" when it comes to cooking.
Fawful has an affinity for food, being a master cook skilled enough that even Bowser cannot help but compliment his cooking. He usually uses food in his metaphors and in the third Mario & Luigi game, he has an underlying motif of food in most of his plans; for instance, at the start of the game, he tricks Bowser into eating a mushroom of his own design which causes him to inhale the Mario Bros. and company.

Speech
Speech
Fawful speaks in Engrish, often saying things that are redundant or hardly make sense (if at all). Fawful is made stranger by his making of several food metaphors and references throughout his speeches ("I drizzled rage dressing on the country next door. Rage dressing on a salad of evil!").
Fawful speaks in Engrish, often saying redundant things, and uses several food metaphors and references throughout his speeches (ex. "I drizzled rage dressing on the country next door. Rage dressing on a salad of evil!" or "Two pieces of Fawful chortle bread get put together on Beanbean Kingdom, making a danger sandwich!"). He specifically refers to the Mario Bros. as "fink-rats".

Fawful often speaks about himself in a third-person point of view, only speaking in the first person when saying phrases such as "I HAVE FURY!". In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, he often replaces the word fury with other words, such as "chortles", "excitement" or "uneasiness", and begins to speak in third-person more often. This is especially noticeable at the end of the game when he seemingly accepts defeat to Mario and Luigi.

When talking to Baby Mario and Baby Luigi in Partners in Time, he often skips words such as do or are at the beginnings of sentences, resulting in him saying things such as "You wearing this now?".

Fawful occasionally rhymes his sentences, only not rhyming when he cannot think of one (ex: "Fawful sings a song of bad! Mushroom Kingdom is so sad! All of it is for Fawful! And the... rhyme... with... that...").

In the Japanese versions, Fawful adds strings of "ru" (る) onto his sentences, and sometimes says "Fururururu" (ふるるるるるる). In the French versions, Fawful also uses many metaphors and speaks with a strong accent, exaggerating when saying the letter R, and frequently saying "Fuyuyuyuyu". In the German versions, he stutters. In the Latin American Spanish versions, he speaks with a very literal translation of English to Latin American Spanish. In the European Spanish versions, he speaks in a very refined European Spanish with a lot of set phrases and an enthusiastic tone. In the Italian versions, he speaks with lots of invented words such as "disgustevole" (disgust able). In the Korean versions, he talks in a similar way to the Japanese versions, adding strings of "rong" (롱) in every sentence such as "Rongrongrongrong" (롱롱롱롱).

Powers and abilities
Fawful often uses his Vacuum Helmet to fight the Mario Bros., and he uses the rocket jets on his Vacuum Helmet to get around places. There is also a vacuum peripheral on the helmet, which can be used to shoot energy balls and was also used to transfer Cackletta's spirit to Bowser and create Bowletta. He also sports a laser gun which he can use to power up his minions or fire beams. In Bowser's Inside Story, many enemies have masks resembling Fawful's face, which is possibly tied to Fawful brainwashing many of Bowser's minions.

Attacks
Fawful is the second boss of Superstar Saga. When fighting him, he does not have much HP. Being an early opponent at this point, Fawful also does not have a large variety of attacks. In his first attack, he shoots green energy balls at the Mario Bros. from his Headgear, and in order to avoid the attack, the player must look at the color of the text when he calls the heroes "fink rats". If the text is red, he shoots at Mario, but if the text is green, he shoots at Luigi. Later in the battle, Fawful says "Have you readiness for this?!?", in which he shoots two energy balls - one at each brother. The color of "this" indicates which brother Fawful targets first. After 18 points of damage, Fawful's helmet falls off, making him unable to shoot fire balls. In this state, Fawful has only one other attack; He can run up to one of the Bros. and try to roll into him. This can be countered by a well-timed jump.

Later on at the end of the game, Fawful is fought again as the penultimate boss. This time, he is much stronger and fights from within a giant dome resembling his head. The dome completely protects Fawful and shoots powerful lasers at both Bros. Unlike the first battle, Fawful has many different attacks, some of which can last for a while. During the battle, he can hide in his dome, defending him from all attacks.

He uses his dome to perform some of his attacks. The main attack is shooting laser beams that move around the Bros., trying to hit them. Sometimes when it is Fawful's turn to attack, he exits for a short moment and shoots more laser bolts from his antenna. The shadows created by the bolts appear above one of the heroes, letting the player know which character is being targeted. To avoid the attack, the Mario Bros. need to hit the bolts with their hammers and send them flying at Fawful, hitting him for a small amount of damage. In addition, when the dome gets hit four times (eight times in the remake), Fawful gets enraged and spins around, shooting more laser bolts at the heroes for them to counter with their hammers. After the bolts spin around the area twice, the Bros. are no longer able to use their hammers, forcing them to jump over the remaining bolts. After this specific attack, the dome overheats, forcing Fawful to stay out of the vehicle for three turns and preventing him from attacking.

After taking enough damage, he starts charging a laser beam and puts a Fawfulized block over the heroes' heads, making them rapidly jump to break it. Shortly after the blocks appear, the laser beam swoops across the stage, trying to hit the Marios. If the blocks are still intact, the Mario Bros. are unable to jump over the beam. Fawful's final attack involves charging at the Bros. The player has to hit his body with the brothers' hammers to counter him as he swoops down at the heroes. During the attack, he flaps his right arm when attacking Mario and flaps his left arm when attacking Luigi.

In Bowser's Inside Story, Fawful is fought by Bowser as Dark Fawful. He is shown to have a very high speed and the ability to utilize Dark Magic. His Vacuum Helmet also aids him in battle and can give him 300 HP when needed. After being beaten, Fawful collapses into a Dark Fawful Bug and escapes from Bowser.

Fawful is the second boss of Superstar Saga. When fighting him, he is fairly easy and has little HP. Later at the end of the game, Fawful is fought again, This time, he is much stronger and also has a giant mecha of his head that would completely protect him and shoot powerful lasers at both bros. However, Mario and Luigi can overheat the mecha and force Fawful out of it. During this battle, Fawful has high defense and a variety of attacks, making him a strong foe.

Fawful, Mario & Luigi series

Fawful (also known as Lord Fawful to his minions) is a Beanish character and a major antagonist in the Mario & Luigi series. He is the secondary antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake, and the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake. He is notable for speaking in broken English and making many food-based metaphors. Fawful is highly intelligent, but he suffers from extreme fits of anger. His name comes from the words "guffaw" (a term that refers to powerful laughter) and "awful".

History[edit]

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

“I am the Great Cackletta's most best pupil, who is named Fawful!”
Fawful, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Though his past is largely unknown, Fawful is implied to have been a long-time follower of Cackletta prior to the events of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake. He is the secondary antagonist of the game.

Fawful prepares to battle Mario and Luigi.

The apparition of Fawful which appears as one of the attacks of Cackletta's Soul
Fawful before his final battle
Fawful preparing for his final battle. "Cackletta" is misspelled here. This was fixed in the remake.

Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser[edit]
“The Lord Bowser that you have such loooove for... He is no longer a thing that is of this world!”
Fawful, Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

“I have boredom... Guests? Now I have... FURY!”
Fawful, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

After his speech, Fawful sells rare badges to the baby Mario Bros. in exchange for beans. Additionally, he hints that the babies should go to Peach's Castle's viewing platform prior to them discovering the Gritzy Desert.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

“But I am having a goal! Mushroom Kingdom... WILL BE MINE!”
Fawful, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Fawful appears as the main antagonist in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake. He began the outbreak of the blorbs by selling "Blorb Mushrooms" to the citizens of Toad Town. Fawful then brainwashes Bowser's minions to have them invade the Mushroom Kingdom. His true plan is to acquire the Dark Star, an ancient evil artifact, and use its power to kill the Mario Bros. and their friends.

Fawful giving the Vacuum Shroom to Bowser in Dimble Woods
Fawful (disguised as a merchant) offers a "Lucky Mushroom" to Bowser.

Fawful stealing the Dark Star.

Fawful absorbing the power of the Dark Star.
Fawful absorbing the power of the Dark Star, thus transforming into a dark form.

After demolishing the castle, Bowser finds Dark Fawful in the castle's conference hall. Before the battle, Dark Fawful speaks like he did in Superstar Saga, showing that he is losing his composure and acting rashly out of anger. He also says how Bowser has gotten in his way just like Mario and Luigi (referring to Superstar Saga's events) and that he now hates him just as much as them, causing Bowser to become annoyed and tell Fawful not to compare him to Mario.

Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
“Great news I am hearing! And you will be joining me in this plan to its utmost completion.”
Fawful, Bowser Jr.'s Journey

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Fawful in Super Mario-kun

With the absence of a Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga arc, Fawful appears in the Super Mario-kun manga only in the Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story story arc, in volumes 40 and 41. He has different motivations in the manga: while in the games he also wants to get revenge on who defeated him in the past, in the manga, he is a typical mad scientist who aims to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, with no personal agenda against Mario and his friends.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

General information[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Fawful artwork from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Fawful as he appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Personality[edit]

Fawful is shown to be very angry at times, but is also seen to be very devoted to Cackletta, whom he served with blind devotion in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and is considered to be Cackletta's "favorite subordinate"[1] in a manner resembling the archetypical "Igor" character.

Speech[edit]

Fawful exclaiming his catchphrase
Fawful wearing his Vacuum Helmet

Fawful speaks in Engrish, often saying redundant things, and uses several food metaphors and references throughout his speeches (ex. "I drizzled rage dressing on the country next door. Rage dressing on a salad of evil!" or "Two pieces of Fawful chortle bread get put together on Beanbean Kingdom, making a danger sandwich!"). He specifically refers to the Mario Bros. as "fink-rats".

An example of Fawful's personality
A demonstration of Fawful's distinctive speech patterns.

Powers and abilities[edit]

Headgear
The first battle against Fawful.

Attacks[edit]

Fawful in the final battle against Mario and Luigi
Fawful in the final battle in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

List of Fawful-themed forces[edit]

Due to his narcissism, Fawful themes most of his minions after himself in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
