Claymorton, originally known as Mack, is a commander of the Smithy Gang and the boss guarding the first Star Piece in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake. He is a giant pogo stick-like sword with floating eyes and a red-colored, roundish humanoid figure attached to his handles, mirroring the Shymores he commands; in the remake, the humanoid figure is now identified as "Claymorton" and appears completely separate from the sword on which he now rides. When attacking, Claymorton shakes his head. Like the other members of the Smithy Gang, Claymorton is modeled after a weapon (in his case, a shortsword). He was originally named after the song "Mack the Knife" (originally "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer" in German). His current name is a portmanteau on "claymore," a kind of sword, and the male given names "Clayton" and "Morton."

Mack is in command of an army of Shysters, pogo-stick riding Shy Guys. Mack also wields powerful fire magic. With his army of soldiers, Mack attacked the Mushroom Kingdom and occupied it. Mario, conveniently, was in Bandit's Way with Mallow, chasing down the thief Croco. Mack allowed his Shysters to overrun the town, causing chaos as they wished.

When Mario and Mallow returned to town, they were shocked by the sudden appearance of the Shysters. Together, they rescued townspeople and fought to the throne room of the castle, where they confronted Mack and his elite Shyster Bodyguards. After a long battle, Mario emerged victorious, driving Smithy's forces out of the Mushroom Kingdom. In the aftermath, Mario earned his first Star Piece. On a related note when Mack is destroyed, the two remaining Shyster Bodyguards will leave to inform Smithy of Mack's demise.

Mack appears to be a large knife with floating eyes. However, there is also a red-colored figure on top of the knife holding the handle of the same as if it were a pogo-stick. When attacking, the red figure begins to shake its "head."

Trivia
Trivia
*Mack's name comes from the song, "Mack the Knife" (originally "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer" in German). The song was composed by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, for the music drama Die Dreigroschenoper, or, in English, The Threepenny Opera. "Mack the Knife" was later covered by both Louis Armstrong and Bobby Darrin.
*In the original SNES game, it is possible to skip the Mack encounter with a trick involving a tricky jump from a Bodyguard over to the Chancellor, who is hiding in the corner. The Bodyguards will not notice Mario, thus the fight will not be triggered. Mack and his gang will be gone after speaking with the Chancellor. The game will continue as normal, though the first Star Piece will not show up in the menu until after the second one is obtained since it was not formally collected. This was fixed in the remake.
*Jack the Knife, a character from Wario: Master of Disguise, has a name very similar to Mack the Knife. It's possible that his name also comes from the song "Mack the Knife".
*When Mallow uses his Psychopath ability on the Machine Made version of Mack, he will say, "Mario! I'm BAAAAAACK!". This implies that one of the Machine Made versions of Mack is actually a rebuilt version of the original, rather than a copy like all the others.
*Strangely enough, the ending seems to imply that the original Mack apparently survived after his defeat, as he, along with Bowyer and Yaridovich, were last seen in the ending parade getting pounded by Smithy's hammer.

Claymorton, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

History[edit]

With his Shymores, Claymorton attacked the Mushroom Kingdom while Mario was in Bandit's Way. Claymorton occupied the throne room of the Mushroom Castle with his Bodyguards while his Shymores terrorized the residents of the surrounding town. After returning to town, Mario and Mallow fought their way to the throne room and defeated Claymorton. Following Claymorton’s defeat, the two remaining Bodyguards left to inform Smithy of Claymorton's destruction. Claymorton would return in the Weapon World, in the form of a gray mass-produced copy of the original. His thought here notably indicates he has the memories of the original, something none of the others' show explicitly. In the parade, Claymorton, along with Bowyer and Speardovich, is seen being pounded by Smithy's hammer.

Battle[edit]

At the start of the battle, Claymorton is accompanied by a quartet of Bodyguards. If they are not defeated within one turn, Claymorton will jump out of the battle screen and will not return until all bodyguards on the field are defeated. When in battle, Claymorton attacks with physical strikes and the spells Flame and Flame Wall. After a few turns, the Shymores will be summoned again, requiring the player to repeat the process until Claymorton is defeated. If all the bodyguards are defeated and he reenters, Claymorton will use Flame Wall for his next attack. If all the bodyguards are defeated in one turn after being summoned, Claymorton summons them again and does not attack.
