You... YOU will make me famous!
Punchinello is one of the major bosses encountered in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. He is named after Pulcinella, a classical character in Italian theater and puppetry. His name may have also been taken from Pulcinella's English variant, Punch and Judy. He mainly uses variations of Bob-ombs while fighting. When one of the seven Star Pieces crashed into the Mole Mines at Moleville, he took it for himself. Punchinello also wants to be famous, according to his wish on Star Hill and his thought. When Mario and his allies arrive in Punchinello's area looking for the Star Piece, he thinks that he can become famous if he can defeat them and engages them in battle.

Punchinello is a somewhat minor villain who appears in the game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. He's an explosives expert who likes to use Bob-ombs in battle. However, it should also be noted that Punchinello is absolutely insane and has a bit of a temper, a character flaw that eventually brings about his destruction. Apparently, Punchinello lives as an outcast in the Moleville Mines, being ostracized from society because of his bad disposition. When one of the seven Star Piece crashed into the mine, he claimed the rare artifact for himself. Strangely enough, Punchinello also wants to be famous one day (perhaps a result from his status as an outcast). Of course, when Mario and his allies arrive in Punchinello's lair looking for the Star Piece, the master of explosives sees an excellent opportunity. If he can defeat Mario (where so many others have failed), Punchinello realizes he will become famous all over the world.
Despite him guarding a Star Piece and having a weapon motif, Punchinello does not appear to have any affiliation with the Smithy Gang. Regular boss music plays when fighting Punchinello instead of the music played during fights with Smithy Gang bosses, there are no Machine Made replicas of Punchinello in the Factory, and Punchinello is not mentioned among the fallen Smithy Gang members by the Clerk. Additionally, one of the wishes in Star Hill appears to be his.

History
In the remake's post-game, a stronger version of Punchinello titled Leveled-Up Punchinello can be fought. He is the second boss to be encountered, after Scratchy-Throat Belome. Before battle, he expresses his desire to defeat Bowser in order to become famous. After the fight, he upgrades Bowser's Chain Chomp into a Wonder Chomp, and is offered a chance to rebuild Bowser's Keep, to which he obliges in order to gain a little fame. In the ending cutscene if the player defeats Smithy after defeating Culex 3D, Punchinello helps with the repairs in Bowser's Keep.

If Mario walks up in front of him, he shoves Mario away with his arms, sending Mario back into the other room. Thus Mario must be behind or near the side of Punchinello to start battling.

Before the inevitable battle, Punchinello throws tiny Micro Bombs (miniature Bob-ombs) at Mario, hoping to eliminate the plumber without having to get his hands dirty. Additionally, if Mario walks up in front of Punchinello, the villain will shove the plumber with his powerful arms, sending Mario flying back into the other room. Thus Mario must approach Punchinello from behind or side to start the actual battle.
When battle starts, Punchinello throws Microbombs at Mario, which can explode after a set amount of turns. In battle, Punchinello attacks with his fist, punching one of Mario's party members. Punchinello also uses the attack Sand Storm.

In battle, Punchinello attacks with his spiked fist, digging his claws into one of Mario's party members. Punchinello also knows the debilitating Sand Storm attack, summoning a massive sandstorm that induces the Fear status ailment in all party members. However, his trademark attack is summoning his mechanical minions, the Bob-ombs.
Punchinello uses four varieties of Bob-omb to aid him in battle. Each variety appears after the boss takes enough damage. He first releases four Microbombs, then four Bob-ombs, and then three Mezzo Bombs.

Punchinello uses four varieties of Bob-omb to aid him in battle. In the beginning of skirmish, Punchinello releases four Micro Bombs, tiny Bob-ombs that do relatively little damage. Mallow's Thunderbolt attack can easily eliminate these minor threats. As Mallow focuses on the bombs, Mario and Geno can attack Punchinello directly. After Punchinello receives enough damage, the mad villain realizes his opponents are tougher than he originally thought. Scarping the Micro Bombs, he summons regular-sized Bob-ombs to attack the heroes. Again, Mallow can use his lighting magic to defeat these bomb enemies, while Mario and Geno focus on pummeling Punchinello. After a few more rounds, Punchinello summons the large Mezzo Bombs, powerful Bob-ombs that inflict major damage when they self-destruct. At this time, Mallow should switch from magic to regular attacks, hitting Punchinello with his Cymbals. Although the Mezzo Bombs are strong, if Mario, Mallow, and Geno can quickly eliminate Punchinello, the Mezzo Bombs won't be a threat.
After Punchinello is defeated, he summons a King Bomb which lands on him and eventually explodes, covering Mario and co. in soot. After cleaning themselves off, the heroes take the third Star Piece and venture deeper into the mines.

Leveled-Up Punchinello
After Punchinello is defeated, the villain attempted to have the last laugh. In fact, Punchinello goes mad and enters a state of hubris. The now-insane villain attempts to summon a King Bomb, a gigantic Bob-omb that, when self-destructed, would eliminate everything caught in its explosion. Mario's party believes the villain is bluffing, for surely Punchinello would be caught in the explosion as well. However, Punchinello was in a state of rage and ignored their warnings. Strangely, the humongous bomb did not fall when summoned. Even more enraged, Punchinello angrily pounds the ground, attempting to summon the King Bomb. Eventually, a King Bomb does fall from the ceiling. However, in his rage, Punchinello wasn't paying attention and the King Bomb smushed him. In the end, his overweening pride proved to be end of him. Ironically, Punchinello was flattened by the very tool he was going to use to make himself immortal.
Punchinello only takes 1 or 2 damage from all attacks, and while he retains the use of Sand Storm, he can also use Flame Wall, Flame Stone and Grinder.

Ultimately, the King Bomb explodes before Mario and his allies can defuse the massive bomb. Thankfully, the bomb was a dud; although the King Bomb exploded, all the explosion did was char Mario's party a little bit. After Mario and his allies clean themselves off, the heroes recover the third Star Piece and venture deeper into the mines. This wouldn't be the last the player sees of the King Bomb, as it is later on encountered at Bowser's Castle during the battle against Magikoopa.
Like before, Punchinello summons Bob-ombs to aid him, with this variety being named "Strong Bob-ombs". Unique to these enemies is that, if they are hit with a perfectly timed Action Command, they turn around to face Punchinello; at least one of them may also enter the battle in this turned-around state. When these Bob-ombs are facing Punchinello, they will explode on him instead of Mario and his party, dealing 80 damage. This means that Punchinello will be defeated after 15 successful explosions.

Later on, it was revealed that Punchinello made a wish at Star Hill, which never got granted due to the Star Road getting destroyed by Exor. It is unknown if it was before or after his encounter with Mario, Mallow, and Geno. If it was the latter, that would mean that he somehow survived after his defeat. Regardless, his current whereabouts are unknown, as he was never seen again after that, not even in the parade that took place during the ending.
Once defeated, Punchinello summons another King Bomb, however this one walks towards him after being lit and explodes on him. However, he, as well as Mario and company, come out of the explosion unharmed.

Punchinello and the Smithy Gang
Profiles and statistics
Although Punchinello is the keeper of a Star Piece, uses weapons in combat, and has a slight resemblance to a bomb himself, he is not a member of the Smithy Gang. In fact, Punchinello's only allegiance is to himself. This is further supported by the fact that the Factory Clerk made no mention of Punchinello while listing all of Smithy's lieutenants that were defeated, nor was there a Machine Made version of him. Also, a certain theme song would usually play whenever a Smithy Gang member was present; this wasn't the case with Punchinello. He is, in fact, one of only two major bosses in the game (the other being the Czar Dragon) who was in possession of a Star Piece and with no affiliation with the Smithy Gang whatsoever.

Punchinello, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Punchinello is one of the major bosses encountered in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. He is named after Pulcinella, a classical character in Italian theater and puppetry. His name may have also been taken from Pulcinella's English variant, Mr. Punch.

Battle[edit]

Regular[edit]

If Mario walks up in front of him, he shoves Mario away with his arms, sending Mario back into the other room. Thus Mario must be behind or near the side of Punchinello to start battling.

When battle starts, Punchinello throws Microbombs at Mario, which can explode after a set amount of turns. In battle, Punchinello attacks with his fist, punching one of Mario's party members. Punchinello also uses the attack Sand Storm.

Punchinello uses four varieties of Bob-omb to aid him in battle. Each variety appears after the boss takes enough damage. He first releases four Microbombs, then four Bob-ombs, and then three Mezzo Bombs.

After Punchinello is defeated, he summons a King Bomb which lands on him and eventually explodes, covering Mario and co. in soot. After cleaning themselves off, the heroes take the third Star Piece and venture deeper into the mines.

Leveled-Up Punchinello[edit]

Punchinello only takes 1 or 2 damage from all attacks, and while he retains the use of Sand Storm, he can also use Flame Wall, Flame Stone and Grinder.

Once defeated, Punchinello summons another King Bomb, however this one walks towards him after being lit and explodes on him. However, he, as well as Mario and company, come out of the explosion unharmed.
