Variant of Magmaargh

Charvaarghs are a type of Magmaargh that attack characters by jumping out of lava. Compared to Magmaarghs, they are lengthier and have appendages resembling wings or fins. On occasion, the Charvaargh enemy has also been referred to as the Lord of Lava.[1][2][3]

History

Super Mario series

Charvaarghs make their first appearance in Super Mario 3D World and reappear in the game's Nintendo Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They appear in only one level, World Castle-7, Simmering Lava Lake where players must make it past them. If a character touches them while not invincible, a life is lost, regardless of the character's form. Charvaarghs cannot be defeated by any method. They are also one of the only two enemies (including bosses) that can defeat the player in one hit, the other being Fuzzy Hordes. These are the only games where the player loses a life upon touching Charvaarghs.

However, most Charvaarghs only show up when the player enters a Clear Pipe for aesthetic purposes.

Super Mario Maker 2

Charvaarghs reappear as placable course elements in Super Mario Maker 2. They are exclusive to the Super Mario 3D World game style. Up to three Charvaarghs can be placed in a single course section. When placed, they will follow the player throughout the level and occasionally leap out in one of two ways. Either it will leap from the background, go high above the player's head, and then back down into the foreground, or it will leap from the bottom of the screen on the playable ground, and fly in an arc back down. If the Player's course is a Castle, Charvaarghs will start their ascents from the lava's surface, even when the lava level changes, a trait also shared by Lava Bubbles. Unlike in their debut appearance, Charvaarghs can be defeated with a Super Star, and like in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, touching one will simply hurt players instead of taking them out instantly.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Charvaarghs return in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS ports. They appear in lava stages either coming out of grates which Captain Toad must walk across, or blocking his path where he must run across Dash Panels. They debut in Rolling Inferno and are seen again in Magma Road Marathon. In this game, they simply damage Captain Toad instead of instantly defeating him.

Mario Party 10

Charvaarghs made their Mario Party debut in Mario Party 10. They appear in Chaos Castle in the Unlucky Spaces to take away Mini Stars in Mario Party Mode or Hearts in Bowser Party Mode.
