Mini Mario is the form that Mario or Luigi takes upon collecting a Mini Mushroom. Occasionally, this transformation may also be brought about by using a Poison Mushroom or various other items. Some early appearances of Poison Mushrooms, such as in Super Mario Kart and Game Boy Donkey Kong, result in a similar, temporary form. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and Toadette can also use this form. This transformation is similar to Wario's Tiny form and Tiny Kong's Mini-Monkey ability.
Mario has been shrunk in other media, namely in the Saturday Supercade episode "The Incredible Shrinking Ape" and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episodes "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers" and "All Steamed Up" as well as during the events of Mario Party DS, though Mini Mario is considered a distinct entity from these occurrences.
History[edit]
Mario Party 4[edit]
Mario Party 4 introduces the Mini Mushroom to shrink players. While in their Mini form, the player can only roll a 1-5. The Super Mini Mushroom allows them to roll two 1-5 Dice Blocks. Players who shrink themselves can also enter Gates, access different parts of a board, and play Mini Mini-Games. In the Bowser's Gnarly Party board, if a mini player crosses Bowser, Bowser burns them and sends them to a special start in the board that is adjacent to two Bowser Spaces and one Fortune Space. Bowser can also shrink players at a random turn in the board while preventing them from using items.
Mario Pinball Land[edit]
In Mario Pinball Land, Mario can buy a Mini Mushroom for ten coins. While mini, Mario can get into entrances like beehives and igloos that would normally be too small for Mario to enter to earn more Power Stars.
Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
In New Super Mario Bros., Mario becomes Mini Mario by eating a Mini Mushroom. While in this form, the player can jump higher, run on water, and fit through small pipes. Mini Mario cannot duck, similar to Small Mario in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. Donut Blocks will also not fall under Mini Mario's weight. However, enemies that Mario can defeat with a stomp at regular size take a Ground Pound to defeat as Mini Mario, as he merely bounces off if he jumps on them. He also cannot grab and hold anything in this form. As with Small Mario, he loses a life if hit in this form, and can only get Super Mushrooms from blocks.
In Mario vs. Luigi, Mini Mushrooms can spawn if a brother collects 8 Red Coins. In addition to the above, fireballs in this mode instantly defeat Mini Mario and Mini Luigi if they are hit by one, rather than stunning them.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
The Mini form also appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, retaining the effects from the previous game, except for the inability to pick up objects, thus making it possible to stomp on enemies without ground pounding if the player is holding a heavy object above their head. In this game, Mario gets a higher-pitched voice in his Mini form. He also gains the ability to duck.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
The Mini form also appears in New Super Mario Bros. 2, along with the Mini Mushroom, having the same effects from the previous games. They only appear in World 3-B, World 4-A, World 5-3 and certain Toad Houses.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
The Mini form reappears in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with the same effects from the previous games. The form now has the ability to run up and down walls in a similar way to a Triangular Block.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
While Mini Mario does not appear in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and Super Mario Maker 2 as a usable form, knocking on a Warp Door in the New Super Mario Bros. U style while in editor mode may cause Weird Mario to appear in this form.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]
In the DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Mini Mushrooms appear in Polastraits, Icepeak, and Blizland. As Mini Mario, Mario is able to cross thin ice, as well as narrow spaces. While Mario can become Mini Mario, Sonic cannot.
Mario Sports Mix[edit]
In Mario Sports Mix, Mini Mushrooms reappear as items. While mini, the player is not able to carry a basketball, hockey puck, or dodgeball. They also have the inability to spike in volleyball, or perform a defensive maneuver in dodgeball.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
- “I guess he got the wrong mushroom!”
- —Cranky Kong, The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Mini form appears in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In this version, the Mini form shrinks the user to a much smaller size than in the games, and unlike the games, getting hit in this form reverts the user to normal size.
While battling Donkey Kong in the Great Ring of Kong, Mario grabs a Mini Mushroom from a ? Block, mistakes it for a Super Mushroom, eats it, and then charges at Donkey Kong. Mini Mario avoids Donkey Kong's punches and stomps, but is soon grabbed by him. Donkey Kong finger-flicks Mario, causing him to take damage and revert to his normal size upon hitting the ring's gate.
Much later on in the movie towards the end of the climax after Bowser is defeated, Peach force-feeds him a Mini Mushroom, transforming him into Mini Bowser. In a mid-credits scene, Mini Bowser, imprisoned in a birdcage in Peach's Castle, continues to sing "Peaches" loudly into the night, only to be interrupted by a Toad who informs him he is past his curfew.
Profiles[edit]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
- Instruction manual description: "Snag a Mini Mushroom to shrink Mario down to micro size. In this teeny form, Mario can go into small pipes and travel down tiny paths. Plus, he's so light that he can perform floating jumps and run on water! If he gets hit by enemies, though, Mini Mario's done for."
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
- Instruction manual description: "Snag a Mini Mushroom to shrink Mario down to micro size. Attacks become weaker, and the only way to take down an enemy is to ground-pound them. In this teeny form, Mario can go into small pipes and travel down tiny paths. If he gets hit by enemies, though, Mini Mario's done for."
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
- Instruction manual description: "Mini Mario and Mini Luigi can't defeat enemies by jumping on them, but they can fit through small spaces and run along the surface of water!"
- "Note: You can attack enemies with a ground pound."
- "Note: You will lose a life upon taking any damage."
New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]
- Instruction manual description: "You can get through tight spaces and dash over water in this form. You can even run up walls! However, Mario's attacks will be weak, so you can only defeat enemies by ground-pounding."
