Chip-Shot Challenge (originally formatted as Chip Shot Challenge) is a 4-Player minigame found in Mario Party 3, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario Party Superstars.
Introduction[edit]
Lakitu appears and places the red flag in the hole to be shot at in the game. The camera pans back to show one of the players about to make a shot, and the minigame begins.
In Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, the flag falls into the hole from the sky. After the camera pans to all the players, one is randomly chosen to go first.
Gameplay[edit]
The players have to make a shot to the hole on the hill as accurately as possible within the time limit. If a player chips into the hole, that player automatically wins. If this happens, Lakitu holds a sign saying "NICE!" Other players can chip in and win too. If no players chip in, the player whose ball is closest to the hole wins. If nobody chips in and two or more players tie for the closest distance to the hole, the minigame ends in a draw.[1] If the ball falls off the island, the player that made the shot immediately loses as Lakitu appears while holding a sign saying "MISS."
In Battle Royale mode in Mario Party 3, the players take turns based on their current positions from first place to fourth place. In Mini-Game mode, the players take turns according to player order.
Mario Party: The Top 100 visual/gameplay changes[edit]
- The player who goes first is chosen randomly, with the remaining players taking turns according to player order.
- There is no rough on the side.
- The flag faces the opposite direction and is animated.
- The stands are replaced with fences and flowers.
- All players' distances are visible throughout the minigame.
- The golf clubs are no longer colored according to the character, instead using the standard player colors.
- Instead of increasing or decreasing in height, the aiming meter fills up.
- Characters vocalize when they hit the ball.
- After the ball lands, a trail appears between it and the hole.
- There are no longer markers showing where each player's ball has landed.
- Computer players' turns can be skipped with .
- Opposing human players' and computer players' aiming meters disappear after three seconds, possibly to prevent others from copying them.
- If multiple players tie for the closest distance, all of those players win, unless no players land the ball on the island.
- The hole-in-one animation is different: Fireworks are set off, and the words "Hole in One" (translated into other languages) appear.
Mario Party Superstars retains most of the visual and/or gameplay changes from The Top 100, with a few differences.
- Skipping computer players' turns is now done with and/or .
- The aiming meters disappear for opposing computer players or online human players only.
- Characters vocalize as their turns start, as they prepare their swings, when they hit the ball, and after their nearest-to-pin distances are shown.
