- This article is about the jump move used in the Mario & Luigi series. For other uses, see High Jump (disambiguation).
The High Jump, also known as the Balloon Jump, is a move that Mario and Luigi can execute in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The function of the move is different in each game, but always serves the same purpose; to reach high places that are otherwise unreachable with a normal jump.
History[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 3DS remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the move is taught by the Starshade Bros. in Stardust Fields alongside with the Spin Jump. With Luigi as the rear brother and selecting the move using and , pressing will make Luigi jump on top of Mario, continuously bouncing on him. Pressing again while this happens will cause the two brothers to jump high into the air, reaching higher places that are otherwise impossible to reach with a normal jump. To cancel the move, the player must press while Luigi is bouncing on top of Mario.
When Mario fills himself up with water, Luigi can use High Jump to make him spit out all the water in him, which can be used to activate fan-like devices that produce coins and mushrooms. Also, when Mario is made smaller via the Mini-Mario move and Luigi attempts to High Jump onto him, making Mario jump when Luigi is directly above will cause him to hit him, producing a coin with each hit, though it causes Luigi to lose HP. This stops when Luigi reaches low enough health. The in-battle equivalent to this move is the Bounce Bros. Bros. Attack.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the player cannot switch between the bros manually by using . This means the player must select the move using the Touch Screen or by using and in order to use it. Also, since Luigi no longer bounces on Mario continuously, the player can move around while he is on top of Mario, and press whenever they want to perform the High Jump.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, this move learned alongside the Balloon Mario technique at Toadley Clinic after the brothers receive the second Star Cure. When Mario uses a pipe that is dispensing air to balloon himself, the brothers can use this move by pressing with Luigi holding him over his head, jumping higher than they normally can and slowly descending downwards afterwards. Pressing when Mario is ballooned makes him deflate himself, returning him back to normal. When using the Balloon Jump, if they move into a vortex of wind, the brothers will be launched further upwards.
The bros use this technique to catch Birdley in Toadley Clinic, who is flying around the clinic in fear when the ventilation system breaks. It is later used to reach the top of the mountain in Plack Beach, where the Star Sage Chakron resides, so the bros can receive the third and final Star Cure to create the Miracle Cure.
