The Oho Jee are natives of Oho Oasis in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, its 3DS remake, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. When spoken to, Oho Jee use broken grammar and say bizarre or nonsensical things. They have small, blonde tufts of hair and bird-like yellow beaks. There are two varieties on Oho Oasis: red ones and blue ones. Their name comes from oho (an onomatopoeia for laughter), as well as sounding like "Oh jeez", an expression used to show surprise or frustration.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

According to a boombox recorded by an expedition group, one of the members was attacked by an Oho Jee, and was then transformed into one. However, they are not enemies by nature, and will not attack unprovoked. If the red or blue Oho Jee are hurt by either Firebrand or Thunderhand respectively, they will become wild and face Mario and Luigi in battle.

At the beginning of a battle, Oho Jee will have 75 HP (54 in the remake), and their only attack is spinning wildly at the brothers, which can be countered by jumping on them. Blue Oho Jee will spin quickly in a diamond pattern, while red Oho Jee will spin slowly in a circle. It is possible for Mario or Luigi to fight them alone, in which case their sole damaging attack will always miss. Red Oho Jee are healed by Firebrand and are weak to Thunderhand, while blue Oho Jee are healed by Thunderhand and are weak to Firebrand.

The Oho Jee act strangely in battle: they may try to run away and, if they are unable to escape, come back saying "I no believe!". They may also hum a song, which slightly heals the brothers, or they may say something nonsensical, which wastes a turn for them. If they are healed too much, they will inflate like a balloon before blasting off like a rocket, causing the battle to end with no experience gained; if this happens, they will no longer be in their aggravated state in the overworld. After they are defeated by the brothers, they will lay on the ground for a moment, seemingly injured, only to jump back up and say a random quip.

A green Oho Jee and a purple Oho Jee, each with a blonde afro, inhabit small islands in the southeastern corner of Oho Ocean, from which they run the Surfing Game.

In the Minion Quest mode of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, two red and green Oho Jee participate in Wendy's "Cutie Battle Contest" as part of a team with the three recurring lagoon-dwellers known as "The Insane Sisters".

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

In the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, red and blue Oho Jee make appearances as enemies in The Omega-onion?! which takes place in Cavi Cape; an orange Oho Jee blocks Morton from collecting the Omega-onion, so Bowser Jr. fights multiple Oho Jee to obtain it. The Oho Jee is also briefly mistaken to be the Omega-onion. One red Oho Jee also appears in The Best Beast as the captain of the level's third round.

Biology[edit]

As mentioned by the boombox on Oho Oasis, it was a team of outsiders calling themselves the "Oho Civilization Research Expedition" that discovered and named the species. One of the Oho Jee within a temple expresses confusion at their naming designation, suggesting that they do not accept it. Aside from naming them, they were the ones to make the discovery that red Oho Jee who were lit on fire would turn into monsters and attack after accidentally setting one on fire. Upon being attacked by said red Oho Jee, one of the members of the expedition team was subsequently transformed into an Oho Jee. Their ability to turn other people into Oho Jee is not acknowledged again outside of this dialogue. Their songs seemingly have healing qualities, as Mario and Luigi can both be healed if the Oho Jee sings during battle. The expedition team's last tape recording mentions that they planned on experimenting on the blue Oho Jee next, hypothesizing that they must have their own trigger of sorts like the red ones do.

Although never explicitly stated or shown, it is implied that Oho Jee shed their skin, as the description to the Oho Jee Wear states it is made from their molted skins. In the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Oho Jee seem to have legs, but in the remake, they almost always have feet with no legs, similar to Goombas or Toads. The only exception to this is when an Oho Jee appears defeated in the overworld, where it has legs just like in the original game. Some artwork from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions shows them as having brown shoes that look much like the ones Toads wear, but their in-game sprites do not reflect that.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Japanese version of the original game, an Oho Jee mentions that it is considering running for mayor of a town named「おっぱい村」 (Oppai Mura), with "oppai" meaning "breasts" and "mura" meaning "village".[2] This was changed in all Western versions as well as the Japanese version of the remake; in English, it asks if Mario and Luigi are strangers, and in Spanish, it says that it will create a town and that it will be a candidate for mayor.
  • The Blazing Shroobs from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and the Calorites from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story both have rapidly moving legs and fire on their heads, making them resemble the red Oho Jee enemies.
