History

Yoshi's Island series

Salvo the Slime is the boss of World 1 in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. Upon entering the boss room, the Yoshi witnesses a Lemon Drop be enlarged by Kamek, turning it into Salvo the Slime. Salvo jumps at the player, trying to push them into a lava pit below his arena, though unlike with most enemies, the player is not hurt by Salvo's touch. Instead, the Yoshi is hurt by the Lemon Drops that Salvo summons. Because Salvo was a Lemon Drop prior to his transformation, Lemon Drops break off Salvo when he is hit by either an egg or a spat-out Lemon Drop. The more Salvo is hit, the smaller he gets, until he disappears altogether.

An alternate variant of him appears later as a non-boss enemy in the game, known in English simply as Slime. It can disguise itself as a block, and it is defeated the same way. The Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Player's Guide considers this enemy to be Salvo the Slime.[1] This was changed in the Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 Player's Guide, where it is considered its own separate entity.[2]

In his artwork for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Salvo is beige, while in-game, he is green. This artwork was slightly changed in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, as his back is now light blue.

Yoshi's Island DS

Salvo makes a brief cameo alongside all the other Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island bosses in the opening to Yoshi's Island DS.

Mario Party series

Mario Party 4

Four different beings of Salvo the Slime appear in Mario Party 4 under his Japanese name, Big Slime. During the minigame Slime Time, the four versions of him appear in yellow, pink, purple, and green. Players must get away from them by pressing A Button as quickly as they can.

Mario Party Advance

Going only by his first name, Salvo makes an appearance as the boss of the second floor of the Duel Tower in Mario Party Advance. This game shows that he is capable of speech. Salvo challenges the player to a game of Volleybomb and rewards the player with the minigame upon defeat.

Profiles and statistics

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

  • Official Nintendo Player's Guide: Yoshi's last stop in World 1 is a castle, but the greeting he gets there isn't exactly chivalrous! Before checking out, Yoshi will have to cope with this enormously icky enemy. The slow-moving Salvo skedaddles faster and faster the more he's hit with dino eggs, but he also throws off lots of Lemon Drops. Besides tasting great, these make excellent eggs![3]
  • Shogakukan guide: プルプルしていて、ぶつかるとバネのようにはじかれる。タマゴを当てると小さなスライムに分裂する。[4] (It pulls and springs back when bumped into. When you hit it with an egg, it splits into smaller Slime Drops.)

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

  • Shogakukan guide: ワールド1-8のボス。ぶつかってもダメージは受けないが、バネのようにはじかれる。タマゴを当てると小さなスライムに分裂。何度か当てて倒そう。[5]

(The boss of World 1-8. You will not be damaged by bumping into it, but it will repel you like a spring. If you hit it with an egg, it splits into small Slime Drops. Hit it several times to defeat it.)

Trivia

  • Although Salvo is indeed a name (specifically a surname), its use in this character's name is a pun on "saliva," referencing his slimy texture. It may also refer to how he discharges multiple Slime Drops (i.e., a "salvo") when hit by an egg.
