Mario performing the Drill Spin

The Drill Spin is a technique used by Mario and Luigi in New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and the Super Mario Maker games. The move causes Mario or Luigi to move in a downward, drill-like spin, which allows Mario or Luigi to break multiple Brick Blocks in a row. It also makes Mario or Luigi's descent much faster, though it restricts his horizontal movement.

History

New Super Mario Bros.

The Drill Spin is first introduced in New Super Mario Bros., where it can be performed after the player jumps off a Spin Block. While Mario or Luigi is in the air, the player should press and hold +Control Pad down. In this game, unlike with a Ground Pound, there is no way to stop a Drill Spin.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The Drill Spin appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where it can be performed by characters in their Propeller forms when +Control Pad down is pressed. Unlike in the previous game, the Drill Spin from the Propeller Mushroom lasts only as long as +Control Pad down is held; the Drill Spin can be stopped and started several times in midair.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

The move reappears in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, keeping the same mechanics as in the previous game.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2

The Drill Spin reappears in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, where it can be performed in the New Super Mario Bros. U style as Propeller Mario.

Super Mario Odyssey

The Drill Spin later reappears in Super Mario Odyssey, where it is used when Mario ground-pounds after performing a Spin Jump.
