1-Up Mushrooms are green Mushrooms that give whoever eats one an Extra Life and are usually the rarest one to be found. The 1-Up Mushrooms first appeared in Super Mario Bros. In the side-scrolling games, they move exactly like normal Mushrooms, but look and act different.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS they are the most common Mushroom; though, they are not the only way to gain a life, as collecting fifty coins also grants a life. These Mushrooms were the only type of Mushroom available in Super Mario Sunshine. The 1-Up Mushrooms appear smaller in this game.

The Paper Mario series featured a similarly looking Mushroom called Ultra Shrooms. Although it looked like a 1-Up Mushroom, they had a different effect as they were the best HP replenishing kind of Mushroom. The Life Shroom has a more similar effect and revive a character as soon as they get knocked out, although the Life Shrooms don't look similar to 1-Ups at all.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the 1-Up Mushroom revives Mario and Luigi with half of their HP if they run out and get knocked out. There is also a stronger variant called a 1-Up Super, which revives with all HP. In Super Mario Galaxy, 1-Ups will give Mario or Luigi an extra life.

Although they do not appear as items in Mario Kart Wii, in the track Coconut Mall, there is a shop in a hidden shortcut that is selling 1-Up Mushrooms along with other classic Mario items. In Daisy Circuit there is also an advertisement for something called "1-Up Coffee".

A 1-Up Mushroom is also a space in the Nintendo Monopoly. It replaces the Income Tax space. When a player lands on this space, he or she has to play either 10% or 200$.

Trivia

The instruction manual of Hotel Mario named the 1-Up Mushroom "Toad".
