Spotlight Swim is a 1-vs-3 minigame found in Mario Party 3 and Mario Party Superstars.
Gameplay
Three players have to shine their respective red, blue, and green spotlights on the individual player at once. The solo player is capable of submerging in the pool, helping prevent detection. However, the player has to resurface every once in a while to breathe, at which point they cannot move. Additionally, upon the player submerging, bubbles can be seen above the player, indicating for a short time their position. If the solo player manages to avoid the team players' spotlights, the solo player wins. If the team players catch the solo player with all the spotlights together, the team wins.
The computer players all scatter their lights when the individual player dives, no matter their difficulty setting.
In Mario Party Superstars, sirens are heard when a spotlight touches the solo player, and the player team vocalizes. Easy computers never dive.
Trio Challenge
In Mario Party Superstars, this minigame is available in Stage 1 and Stage 4 of the Trio Challenge in Mt. Minigames.
In Stage 1, (a) human player(s) play(s) as a team against an Easy CPU solo opponent, and the rank requirements are:
- A: Win with 20 or more seconds left
- B: Win with 13–19 seconds left
- C: Win with 6–12 seconds left
- D: Win with 1–5 seconds left
In Stage 4, a single human player plays against Easy CPU opponents, and the rank requirements are:
- A: The player should keep their head above water for 20 seconds
- B: The player should keep their head above water for 15–19 seconds
- C: The player should keep their head above water for 10-14 seconds
- B: The player should keep their head above water for 5–9 seconds
Ending
If the solo player wins, they celebrate before a Lakitu arrives with a ladder (in Mario Party 3) or fishing rod (in Mario Party Superstars) and picks them up, carrying them off, while the team members perform their losing poses. If the team wins, a cage drops on the solo player before the team celebrates. In Superstars, the solo player shows a sad expression once the team players celebrate.
