New York Minute is a race course in Mario Kart Tour. It is named after and inspired by New York City, United States, and is set in nighttime. It made its debut in the city's namesake tour and the first tour overall, the New York Tour. The course has four routes, the most out of any course alongside Tokyo Blur, appropriately named New York Minute, New York Minute 2, New York Minute 3 and New York Minute 4, each debuting in the 2019 Holiday Tour, 1st Anniversary Tour and 2nd Anniversary Tour respectively. The course also appears as a battle course, starting with the ??? Tour.

The name of the track comes from an American expression used to designate very short intervals of time. Like the similarly inspired New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey, New York Minute features a number of references to Donkey Kong, including the Times Square jumbotron displaying the original arcade game.

In reference to her status as mayor of New Donk City (which is based on New York City), this course is a favorite of Pauline. Meanwhile, the second route is a favorite of Pauline and Yoshi (Reindeer), the third is a favorite of Pauline, Pauline (Party Time), Mario (SNES), Waluigi (Bus Driver), and Dry Bones (Gold), and the fourth is a favorite of Pauline, Baby Peach (Cherub), Luigi (Classic), Toadette (Explorer), Peach (Explorer), and Penguin Mario.

New York Minute returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass DLC. It is a combination of the first three courses, and appears as the first course of the Turnip Cup.

New York Minute

In the standard layout, all of the racers start the course in front of Times Square, where many sponsors can be seen. Just after the starting line, the road bends in a slight curve to the right through Broadway and ends in a bridge that leads into Central Park. In the park, the road takes a sharp turn to the left and circles back under the bridge where the racers entered the park. After the bridge, the road continues straight until it turns sharply to the right back into the city, where a blocked out entrance to the Rockefeller Center and the building itself can be seen in front. There, the players turn left and pass the Empire State Building and St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. After another turn to the right, the players are back at the starting line. In New York Minute R, this layout is reversed.

In Times Square, many billboards can be seen. There are ads for Galaxy Air, Banana Boy ("The Smash Hit Musical!"), Broadway Musical Entertainment, Donkey Kong ("The Best Musical!"), Burning DK, Barrel Travel, 1-UP Mushroom Car Insurance Group, Mario Work Gear, and Shy Guy Metals.

The course also appears as New York Minute R (reverse), New York Minute T (with ramps), and New York Minute R/T (reverse and with ramps).

New York Minute 2

In the standard layout, all of the racers start the course in front of Times Square. Just after the starting line, the road bends in a sinusoidal curve to the left and then the right through Broadway and ends in a cobblestone path that leads into Central Park. In the park, the road takes a sharp turn to the right and circles back to the bordering road, where it takes an abrupt left. After a sharp right turn, the players reach a Glide Ramp while approaching the Empire State Building. After two sharp right turns, the players return to the starting line.

The course also appears as New York Minute 2R (reverse), New York Minute 2T (with ramps), and New York Minute 2R/T (reverse and with ramps).

New York Minute 3

In the standard variant, all of the racers start the course in front of Times Square. Just after the starting line, the road bends in a sinusoidal curve to the left and then the right through Broadway and ends in a cobblestone path that leads into Central Park. Players stay in a straighforward on the park path until it turns sharply to the right back into the city. There, the players pass the Rockefeller Center and enter 30 Rockefeller Plaza. After this, racers follow a tunnel where they can see the Statue of Liberty. After a light turn to the left, they exit the tunnel with the finish line just in front.

The course also appears as New York Minute 3R (reverse), New York Minute 3T (with ramps), and New York Minute 3R/T (reverse and with ramps).

New York Minute 4

Similar to Tokyo Blur 4, the track visits every landmark and location found in the previous three iterations of the New York Minute course on a race divided by two sections instead of two laps. Due to this, it has a different Starting Grid layout. In the standard layout, the course starts out in front of Times Square. The player travels on the right side of the Y-joint on Broadway and takes a Dash Panel across some parked cargo trucks to a 270-degree loop around Central Park. After a sharp right turn, the player enters the Empire State Building and takes a right reverse curve through the tower's foyer before entering its parking lot. A gradual right turn follows, sending the player back to the front of Times Square for the second section. This time, the player follows the left side of the Y-joint, then takes a sharp right to the parked cargo trucks and taxis, which also features two dash panel ramp trucks (one with a Dash Panel and one with a Glide Ramp). After three more sharp rights behind the Empire State Building, the player reaches the finish line, finishing the race.

The course also appears as New York Minute 4R (reverse), New York Minute 4T (with ramps), and New York Minute 4R/T (reverse and with ramps).

New York Minute as it appears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

New York Minute reappears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via the Booster Course Pass downloadable content. It appears as the first course in the Turnip Cup, and as such was added in the second wave of the DLC. Like Tour Tokyo Blur, this version of New York Minute dedicates each lap to one of the variants in Mario Kart Tour. The first lap is based on New York Minute 1, second lap follows the layout of New York Minute 2 and the third lap follows the layout of New York Minute 3. The course has received significant visual upgrades compared to its original appearance. The course features numerous more Toads, Yoshis, and Shy Guys than its Tour counterpart.

There are some minor tweaks to the course layouts for this iteration, however. For example, unlike New York Minute 2 in Mario Kart Tour, the Glide Ramp seen in the first two laps does not encompass the width of the track, instead it now only occupies the left half. Two Water-spouting manholes appear - one is to the side of the bus after the gliding section, and one is along the lap 2 route. Goombas now appear in Central Park. Additionally, the split path with one route facing 30 Rockefeller Plaza and the other going past it, then by it has been opened up, instead of being split across variants like in Tour. Taxis appear along the final portion of laps 1 and 2.

It is one of two courses from Mario Kart Tour to appear in the second wave, alongside Sydney Sprint.

Trivia

  • Pauline being affiliated with this course is an indirect reference to her status as mayor of New Donk City, which is based on New York City.
  • In a tweet about this course by the official Mario Kart Tour Twitter account, an image of the tunnel section of the city only visited in New York Minute 3 and New York Minute 4 is erroneously included.[1]
  • New York Minute, Los Angeles Laps, Sydney Sprint and Vancouver Velocity are the only courses in Mario Kart Tour based on real-world locations that are not the capital cities of their respective countries.
  • The first route for this course is the course with the longest time between appearances in two tours out of all courses in Mario Kart Tour. The course had not appeared in Tour again following its debut, meaning it took 1,134 days for it to return in the 2022 Autumn Tour.
