Proposal Draft

When going through the wiki, I often come across pages like Fwoosh that have infoboxes showing their first appearance in a game, and their latest appearance in... a port or remake of that game. Yes, Super Mario 3D All-Stars may literally be the latest release to feature it, but I feel like this misses the point of the inbobox entries. In my mind, it gives a quick look at the history of the subject. Bull's-Eye Blaster being introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3 and appearing in Super Mario Bros. Wonder quickly gives the jist that this is a historic subject that continues to see use today. Meanwhile, Bob-omb Buddy's appearances being Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars just tells me that it was in 64, despite the extensive history that they actually have.

To remedy this, I propose that these infoboxes should distinguish when the latest appearance is in a reissue. When it is, the box will be split to have the reissue game displayed alongside the subject's most recent original appearance, in a fashion much like non-Super Mario characters list both their latest overall appearance and latest Super Mario appearance. This would have some caveats and nuances.

  1. A reissue should only be noted as such if the subject also appeared in the original game. Triangular Block does not appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, so Super Mario Advance 4 is an original appearance.
  2. Similarly, If a subject appears in new content within a reissue, then the reissue constitutes a new appearance. This would apply to Blockstepper as it appears in Bowser's Fury.
  3. If a subject only appears in a game and its own reissue, then no note is necessary. The original game does not need to be listed twice, much like subjects that are only in one game.

I'm currently working on a large table for this article that would easily show what games each distinct color of Yoshi appears in, which I think has been lacking from the article currently. A large issue I've come into is what is considered a "Brown Yoshi". As may be obvious, "brown" as a color is actually just a dark shade of orange, which makes the distinction between Brown Yoshi and Orange Yoshi unclear, and I think the wiki is currently a bit too generous with what it considers brown. I would like to officially settle this matter, and clear up what may be a Brown Yoshi from what may be an Orange Yoshi in the dark.

There appear to be three titles that are relevant to this: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, and Paper Mario. All later games seem much less ambiguous about having only Orange Yoshi. For the most open voting scheme, this proposal uses the recently approved poll proposal system. For each of the three games, you may vote in support or opposition independently. As such, each game has distinct arguments to be made.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: I would say that this Yoshi is undeniably brown ingame. There is though, the lingering fact that as far as I can find, there is no official basis to the name "Brown Yoshi". Some artwork also depicts the Yoshi as quite orange.

Yoshi's Story: For this one, I have to say the storybook sprite is quite saturated, and the unused playable "brown" Yoshi is both literally in shadow and has the same blue boots that Orange Yoshi would go on to have, as Yoshi's Story codified many of the Yoshis' standard shoe colors.

Paper Mario: The Village Leader's friend has a color very similar to Miss. T, who I think is agreeably rather orange. It only looks brown because of the game's dark color palette, and if you edit the game's sprites to bring the dull grey "white" to actual white, the Yoshi becomes undeniably orange.
