Template:Species-infobox Spike Bars are obstacles that first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They are similar to Fire Bars, but have spiked balls in place of fireballs and can usually be destroyed by means of a Statue Leaf or Lucky Bell, whereas Fire Bars are completely indestructible. They can inflict damage on the player, causing them to lose a power-up form, shrink down in size or lose a life.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario 3D Land

Contrary to Fire Bars, which mostly appear in only lava-themed levels, Spike Bars are found in a multitude of levels throughout the game. As with Fire Bars, there can be two Spike Bars rotating around the same axis, though unlike Fire Bars, there are no varieties of Spike Bar which rotate on their side or have more than two bars rotating around the same axis. They will break if they come into contact with Mario or Luigi in their statue forms, releasing several coins.

Super Mario 3D World

Objects similar to Spike Bars, known as spiked rollers[1], appear in Super Mario 3D World; instead of acting like Fire Bars, they generally roll around a center. Also, they are only seen with two or four bars rotating around the same axis. These types of spiked rollers are found in Boiling Blue Bully Belt and Broken Blue Bully Belt. Additionally, Spikes attack by producing spiked rollers and throwing them forward, which roll down the path in front of them. Other individual spiked rollers can also be found rolling on pendulum platforms, or swinging back and forth via two chains.

All spiked roller varieties can be destroyed by Mario and his company if they assume the Lucky Cat form.

Super Mario Run

Spike Bars return in Super Mario Run as obstacles in the level Spike Bar Jungle, and are designed to look closer to their original appearance from Super Mario 3D Land. Albeit indestructible in this game, Spike Bars can be bounced on safely by Yoshis.

Mario Party: Star Rush

In Mario Party: Star Rush, Spikes produce spiked rollers in Roller Revenge.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

A spiked roller can be found at Underwater Village, a location in Spooky Trails from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. It is stuck between some plants grown away from the main path. Beep-0 conjectures that whoever possessed it must have left the area in a hurry, which is, he claims, "an ominous sign". The weapons Spike Strike and Big Spike are designed after spiked rollers, though their description refers to them as Skewers.

Mario Tennis Aces

In Mario Tennis Aces, Spike produces a spiked roller and uses it to hit the tennis ball in his Special Shot.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Spike Bars can be seen in the Spike's quarters in Bowser's Castle.
