Mikey Mines[1][2] are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. These mines come in two versions. The underwater ones have eyes that glow like headlights and regenerate themselves after detonation. The more common space ones, referred to as Space Mines,[1] appear as faceless spiked bombs. Both can be defeated without harming Mario (or Luigi) if they are hit by a Star Bit or a Koopa Shell.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

Space Mines fill the Sling Pod Galaxy.

In Super Mario Galaxy, Space Mines are usually found floating in large groups that must be passed with Pull Stars, Sling Pods, or bubbles. Most hold still, spinning in place, but a few travel in lines or in circles along a glowing pink track.

The aquatic Mikey Mines first appear in a dormant state until approached, at which point they make a radar sound, open their eyes watch Mario unless he goes away again. If detonated, they reappear in a small form before returning to normal. They appear attached to chains, with ones on long chains moving vertically along their length. A group of them holds still around a shipwreck that must be destroyed by detonating them for the mission Boo in a Box.

An unused landmine variant of Mikey Mine is located in the files of Super Mario Galaxy, under the name Jiraira.[3] It is fully functional, and it regenerates after detonation.

Both types of Mikey Mines return in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Generally, the space ones act the same as in the predecessor, though some may release coins, 1-Up Mushrooms, or Star Bits. Moving ones also no longer have a visible track. Yoshi is shown to be incapable of eating them.

The aquatic Mikey Mines now move vertically without a chain. They are found individually in narrow watery passages, though they still respawn if destroyed.

Remnants of the previous game's unused landmine variant exist in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 data, though the model itself has been removed.[4]
