The Gold Tires (known as the Gold Wheels in British English versions) are a set of tires in the Mario Kart series. They are gold versions of the Standard tires. CPUs never use the Gold Tires, along with the Gold Standard, and the Gold Glider, making these tires player-exclusive.

History[edit]

Mario Kart 7[edit]

The Gold Tires, from Mario Kart 7

In Mario Kart 7, the Gold Tires are unlocked by collecting 15,000 coins alternatively, or getting at least a star rank in every GP cup for every engine class. They offer roughly the same stat boosts as the Slick tires, and they offer the best speed boost, but they also offer the worst off-road boost. However, the Gold Tires give up some more acceleration to enhance weight. Additionally, they are tied with the Slick, Monster, and Red Monster, for the weakest handling boost in the game.

In terms of their hidden stats, the Gold Tires have a negative impact on sea speed, but they do not affect the sea handling stat. They also hinder the air handling stat, making it more difficult to steer while using the glider, and unlike the Slick tires, which increase drifting, the Gold Tires hinder drifting. Based on stat totals alone, the Gold Tires have the lowest stat total of every tire in the game.

When the Gold Tires are combined with the Gold Standard body and Gold Glider, they complete the whole Gold Standard. This kart gives great speed (the 2nd biggest boost in the game behind the Gold or Slick tires combined with the B Dasher, Zucchini, or Blue Seven) and good weight, but has a bad handling and drifting boost, and abysmal off-road (the smallest boost in the game, which is on par to if the Slick tires were used instead).

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

The Gold Tires also appear in Mario Kart 8, along with the other gold parts from Mario Kart 7. They look slightly different than they do in Mario Kart 7, however.

In Mario Kart 8, the Gold Tires' stats have been altered to be more balanced, boosting ground speed and weight, while hindering acceleration and traction. In terms of their hidden stats, the air speed and anti-gravity speed stats receive a boost, while the water speed and mini-turbo stats are hindered. The Gold Tires share their stats with the Metal tires. The player can unlock the Gold Tires by beating all the non-DLC Staff Ghosts in Time Trial mode.

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Gold Tires' stats are much less balanced than in Mario Kart 8, only boosting ground speed and weight. All the other stats (except water speed) are hindered, with acceleration being hindered the most. The Gold Tires still share their stats with the Metal tires. The player can unlock the Gold Tires by beating all 48 Staff Ghosts in the 150cc Time Trial mode.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

The Gold Tires seen in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reappear in Mario Kart Tour used by the Gold Snow Skimmer, Gold Kiddie Kart, Gold Standard, Gold Double-Decker, Gold Jingle Bell, Gold Hop Rod, Gold Paintster, Gold Warrior Wagon, and the Gold Wild Slugger. The Gold Blooper, Gold Cheep Charger, Gold Pipe Frame, Gold Bunny, Gold Zucchini, Gold Bullet Blaster, and the Gold Fish Bone Ferry use a Super Mario Kart variant, while the Gold Sweet Ride and Gold Eagle use a Mario Kart Wii variant and the Gold 8-Bit Pipe Frame uses a pixelated Super Mario Kart variant.
