Mario Kart World is an upcoming game in the Mario Kart series set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title worldwide on June 5, 2025. Initially teased during the Nintendo Switch 2's reveal trailer on January 16, 2025, as the first game shown for the system,[11] the game was properly revealed in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. It is the sixteenth entry in the Mario Kart series, the twelfth to be released by Nintendo, the first new Mario Kart title since Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit (released almost five years prior), and the first original, major console entry in the series since Mario Kart 8 (released 11 years prior). It is also the first Mario Kart game to be a launch title for its console and to feature Kevin Afghani's voicework.
Races now consist of 24 racers, doubling from the previous 12. Players receive points in racing as before, with some positions receiving the same number of points.[12] Bikes and ATVs return following their absence in Mario Kart Tour. Some karts in this game utilize unique wheel designs, with some lacking wheels entirely in favor of treads. Kart customization as seen in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 does not return, and gliders introduced in Mario Kart 7 are also absent; instead, karts can now extend wings, which function the same as gliders. Karts can also now drive along the top of water rather than beneath it, with both new mechanics creating a comparable vehicle system to Diddy Kong Racing. Karts also gain the ability to drive on walls after a height boost without the need of anti-gravity, and balance on railings and other thin platforms to quickly charge up Mini-Turbos.[12] When holding down the button after a hop without turning, players can charge up a short jump instead of initiating a drift.[13] After such a jump, the player is granted a small speed boost similar to a Mini-Turbo. The jumps can be charged to blue, orange, and yellow sparks, with each granting a longer-lasting boost after landing.[14][15] In addition, two new in-game modes were added: Knockout Tour and Free Roam. Knockout Tour is an all-out battle mode where players race over consecutive tracks and are eliminated on a specific lap if not met after the required amount of racers, while Free Roam is an open-world adventure mode where one or multiple players can freely explore any track both on- and off-road.[1]
The art style of the game's characters appears to have changed significantly to resemble 2D illustrations drawn by Shigehisa Nakaue, much like the in-game art style of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Additionally, characters now have a wide variety of alternate costumes, and the clothing worn by characters is substantially more detailed than in previous games. The game's roster marked the playable debut of many enemies from across the series, including Cataquack, Coin Coffer, Swoop, and Conkdor, among many more. Altogether, this game features the most brand new playable character additions to the Mario Kart series to date.
The game was covered during the Nintendo Treehouse: Live events on April 3 and 4, 2025.[12][16] A dedicated Nintendo Direct for the game titled the "Mario Kart World Direct" is set to be broadcast on April 17, 2025 at 6:00 a.m. PST / 9:00 a.m. EST / 2:00 p.m. BST.[1]
Characters
Racers
There are currently 50 racers confirmed, including 30 characters returning from past installments and 20 new playable characters, all of which aside from Goomba, Piranha Plant, Pianta, Spike, and Dolphin also making their first playable appearance overall. All new characters except Coin Coffer also appear in the game as either background characters or obstacles during races. Additionally, Nabbit, Hammer Bro, Chargin' Chuck, and Monty Mole are playable for the first time in a home console Mario Kart game, following their debuts in Mario Kart Tour.

New characters
Character costumes
Some characters now have costumes that they can wear, similar to Mario Kart Tour and Super Mario Odyssey, with some costumes from those games making a return. These costumes are obtained mid-race after eating various food items, with certain characters having up to 10 costumes. In the game's demo, it is shown that costumes have their own slot on the character selection screen, unlike in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though it is unknown if this will apply to the final game.

Courses
So far, Mario Kart World is known to have 30 courses (32 if the two routes for Crown City and Peach Stadium are counted separately); 16 (18) of those courses are new, while 14 return from previous entries, including one course from Mario Kart Tour, two courses each from Super Mario Kart (which are combined versions of five courses from the game), Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Kart 7, and three courses from Mario Kart DS, while no courses from Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart 8 are shown to return so far. New to the series are intermissions,[35] which are long, non-looping tracks filled with various hazards that connect from one course to another across a large, open world, which is explorable in Free Roam mode.[1]
Classic courses in this game (marked with their origin game's prefix below) have been significantly revamped, bearing even less resemblance to the original courses than as they appeared in previous games. Unlike previous games since Mario Kart DS, the game's cups are not separated between new and classic courses, with the game's known seven cups instead featuring a varying amount of both types of courses.[1] This is the first Mario Kart game since Mario Kart: Super Circuit to not have prefixes appended to the names of any of the classic courses.
Grand Prix
The format of the Grand Prix has been changed significantly from previous games. Now, only the first race of a cup follows the traditional three-lap format. The last three races follow a sectioned format instead, with the first two sections of the race taking place across intermissions that transition from the previous course to the next, while the final section consists of one lap of that next course.[12] Three-lap races are not entirely absent from the game, though it is currently unclear how they are implemented.[36] One mode allows players to configure intermissions in the rules.[35]
The backgrounds of the cup icons are reflective of the region the cup's courses are located in. For example, the Star Cup's icon has an icy background, as its courses are near or within the snowy region.

Other courses
While not confirmed to be playable as traditional race courses, several other courses can be seen or visited in the world map or during intermissions, including Ghost Valley 1, Ghost Valley 2, and Ghost Valley 3 at the entrance to Boo Cinema, and Choco Island 2 just south-west of Choco Mountain.[31] Certain sites and landmarks also resemble past courses, including one resembling Vanilla Lake 1 south of Sky-High Sundae, one resembling Big Donut south of Bowser's Castle, and a quicksand pit that resembles Thwomp Desert in the desert south of Airship Fortress.[18]
Knockout Tour
Knockout Tour consists of rallies rather than cups, with each of the eight rallies having 6 races within. Unlike races, there are no breaks in between, as players who qualify for the next race will simply continue it. Unlike the Grand Prix, Knockout Tour focuses primarily on the intermissions between the courses, with the first five races taking place on a continuous path of them, while only the final race consists of a lap around the final course.[47]

Vehicles
Karts, Bikes and ATVs all return in Mario Kart World. All racers use different vehicles in the trailer, with each vehicle having unique wheel and tire designs. Vehicles are no longer customizable, like they were up to Mario Kart Wii and in Mario Kart Tour. Instead of gliders, vehicles now feature wings that allow them to glide in a similar manner. When going over water, the wheels of all vehicles change into water skis, allowing them to float.[12]

Differences from previous Mario Kart games
- Races now consist of 24 racers compared to the previous 12.
- By default, a Grand Prix now involves the first track of the cup being played with all three laps before subsequent races involve two-section intermissions leading into a full lap of a track for the final section.[12]
- Getting hit by a car or train at certain angles causes the player to become unbalanced as opposed to spinning out.[12]
- Rather than using hang-gliders like in games since Mario Kart 7, vehicles now use retractable wings to soar through the air.
- If a racer falls off a course in the middle of a gliding section, Lakitu will place them back in the air so they continue gliding rather than dragging them to the nearest road.[14]
- Vehicles no longer drive underwater, and instead continue along the surface of the water.
- The amount of coins a player can hold now caps off at 20 compared to the previous 10.
- Opening cinematics before races in the Grand Prix mode now all happen at once before the first race.[12]
- Cups are no longer restricted to have strictly new or classic courses.
- Racers can now trick multiple times in the air.[12]
- Racers may now trick at any time while gliding.[12]
- Racers can now trick off of other racers if they land on top of them.[12]
- The drivers of car obstacles are now visible.
- Goombas now charge towards racers when noticing them (similar to the 3D Super Mario games), rather than simply walking in place or in a left-to-right pattern.[12]
Items
- The Lightning now only shocks players ahead of the user, rather than all opponents.[25]
- The Bullet Bill no longer causes players that it hits to spin out.[14]
- The Fire Flower now has a limit of eight fireballs, compared to the previous 10 in Mario Kart 8.[16]
- The Boomerang Flower can now be used up to four times, compared to to the previous three in Mario Kart 8.[25]
- Using the Feather item now allows the user to trick after using it.[16]
- Stars can be found bouncing along the ground, as they do in the 2D Super Mario games, in Free Roam, instead of remaining stationary.[64]
- Racers under the effect of the Mega Mushroom item no longer shrink back to normal size when hit by Lightning.[71]
