Gameplay
Overview
Three players have to shine their respective red, blue, and green spotlights on the individual player at once. The single player is capable of submerging in the pool, helping prevent detection. However, the player has to resurface every once in a while to breathe, at which point they cannot move. Additionally, upon the player submerging, bubbles can be seen above the player, indicating for a short time their position. If the solo player manages to avoid the team players' spotlights, the solo player wins. If the team players catch the solo player with all the spotlights together, the team wins.

In the ending, if the solo player wins, they do a winning pose before a Lakitu carries them off with a ladder (replaced by a fishing rod in Mario Party Superstars), as the team members do their losing animations. If the solo player loses, a cage drops on them, and the team players do their winning animations, as the solo player appears sad in the moment.
If the solo player wins, they celebrate before a Lakitu arrives with a ladder and picks them up, carrying them off, while the team sulks. If the team wins, a cage drops on the solo player before the team celebrates.

Spotlight Swim is a 1-vs-3 minigame found in Mario Party 3 and Mario Party Superstars.

Overview[edit]

Spotlight Swim from Mario Party Superstars.
Gameplay from Mario Party Superstars

The solo player swims around, avoiding the red, blue, and green spotlights shone by each team player. The CPU team players move their spotlights away when the player dives, regardless of difficulty setting. The solo player can go underwater to dodge the spotlight, though they resurface at times. In Mario Party Superstars, a siren sound plays whenever a spotlight is shone on the solo player. If the team players each shine a spotlight on the solo player, they win, but if the solo player avoids this until time runs out, they win.

Spotlight Swim is features as Stages 1 and 4 of the Trio Challenge in Mt. Minigames. Stage 1 involves human players against a Solo CPU player at Easy difficulty. For Stage 1, the player can earn Rank A by winning with 20 or more seconds left; Rank B if it is 13–19; Rank C if it is 6–12; or Rank D if it is 1–5 seconds. In Stage 4, a human controls the solo player and competes against three CPUs at Easy difficulty. For Stage 4, the ranking is dependent on how long the player keeps their head above water: Rank A if it is 20 seconds; Rank B for 15–19 seconds; Rank C for 10–14; or Rank D for 5–9 seconds.
