- “Oh, maybe you can help... I'm just too old for this. My son's all grown up but won't get a job. So I had to go out and find one for him. He did NOT like that, so he ran off, fast as he could. He doesn't like working, but running? He's great. No one can catch him. I've heard you help people, so can you catch my son? I'm at my wits' end... Please, I beg you!”
- —Woman, Mario & Luigi: Brothership
The Runaway Son is a side quest in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. In this quest, Mario and Luigi must chase after a mother's son because he refuses to work.
The Runaway Son becomes available after linking Bulbfish Island and expires after the second visit to Fortress Zokket. Clearing the side quest awards two Speed Beans.
Side quest[edit]
To initiate the side quest, Mario and Luigi must speak to an old woman on Desolatt Island. She cries and tells the Bros. that her son won't work and always runs away, even though she found a job for him. The son then shows up during the conversation and dashes off upon being noticed. The mother then orders the brothers to catch him. The son is hiding however, and must be found. If the Bros. are unable to find him, they can talk to his mother for a hint on where he is.
The son ran off to the east, next to a staircase. After he is found, he runs off again. He must then be seemed out three more times. His second hiding place is behind a shopkeeper, the third is on a ledge next to the siblings that have the Ultra-Sweet, Super-Rich Cake side quest, and finally the son is on top of a bridge connecting the roofs of two buildings. When he is found here, he runs off the bridge and crashes to the ground. When spoken to, Snoutlet suggests they take him back to his mother.
The mother then thanks Mario and Luigi, and tells her son that she got him a job at delivering mail. The son then promises his mother that he will deliver mail and help people. The side quest is then complete.

- Pink gossip: "That tragic story from Desolatt Island?"
- Blue gossip: "I've heard it too! That awful son who's mooching off his mom!"
- Yellow gossip: "If only all kids were as dutiful as Willma's!"
- Pink gossip: "The mom even found her son the perfect job!"
- Yellow gossip: "And STILL her son won't work?"
- Pink gossip: "Oh, he's working hard, alright...to avoid her!"
- Blue gossip: "Well, we'd never laugh at another mom."
- Pink gossip: "But at a son who's a mooch, a fool, AND a loafer, to boot?"
- All three: "Ohohohoho!"
- "Can you believe that son who's mooching off his mom on Desolatt Island..."
