Tattle
That's a Cherbil. It's a nasty gasbag that spews a plume of sleepy gas... Max HP is 5. Attack is 2. That gas will put you to sleep, so don't go sniffing it... Some say the gas comes from their mouths. Some say it comes from elsewhere... ...Oh, dear...

Mario put to sleep by a Cherbil

A Cherbil is a floating enemy found in Super Paper Mario. They are one of the more common enemy species in the game, appearing in various locations such as Yold Desert, the Gap of Crag or the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials in room 6. They have the ability to put the player to sleep by spewing pink gas at them.

Cherbils and their cousins could be named after the city of Chernobyl, Ukraine, the site of a nuclear disaster in the 1980s that caused noxious radioactive clouds to hang over the city for months. Their names can also be derived from gerbil, a small rodent. Their appearance is likely inspired by a molecule - seemingly water (two Hydrogen, and one Oxygen) or carbon dioxide (one Carbon and two Oxygen) - another nod to the chemical fallout of Chernobyl.

Trivia

  • O'Chunks mentions Cherbils when he wants to get Count Bleck to get him to fight Mario. He supports their bottom-like appearance by saying he'll "Spank 'em like naughty little Cherbils". Tippi's tattle on the Cherbils also supports this claim.
