Hello to all the wonderful readers out there, and welcome to this month's edition of Pipe Plaza! I've just gotten back from my vacation in Minnesota! I don't know if any of you have ever been to the Mall of America before, but I swear that place keeps getting bigger and bigger every time I go... Also, don't try and walk the whole mall all in one go. It gets exhausting very quickly.

Onto important stuff! You'll notice that we've switched up the layout of our sections a bit, this is mainly an organizational thing! We put the sections that mainly have to do with the wiki together, and the ones of a more general info focus are all together as well. Don't worry, these are still the sections you know and love, they just might be in a different spot than you're used to. That being said, if you want to write your own Pipe Plaza section and see it among the ones we have now, it's never too late to send an application in! Just head over to the the sign up page for the info you need!

Oh, and Happy Pride Month!! Now go enjoy what we here in Pipe Plaza have in store for you this time around ^^

Poll Committee Discussion

Written by: Power Flotzo (talk)

Hello everyone! It’s me, PF, here to bring you the Poll Committee Discussion for the month of June. Let’s sink our teeth into another analysis of the greatest polls to grace the MarioWiki’s front page!

Archives

Mario has only used F.L.U.D.D. in one Super Mario game. Would you like to see more games featuring Mario using F.L.U.D.D.? (winstein (talk) and Hooded Pitohui (talk), May 9th, 2021)

Template:Archived Poll

Should Nintendo use Donkey Kong (1981) as the basis of the anniversary celebrations for the Super Mario franchise over Super Mario Bros. (1985)? (winstein (talk) and Hooded Pitohui (talk), May 23rd, 2021)

Template:Archived Poll

Analyses

Mario has only used F.L.U.D.D. in one Super Mario game. Would you like to see more games featuring Mario using F.L.U.D.D.?

According to the results of this poll, the majority of the voters (about half) would like F.L.U.D.D. to return as the main mechanic in a new platformer. Seeing as it has been almost two decades since Super Mario Sunshine (the game which established Mario wielding F.L.U.D.D.), I can see how many people want to relive the nostalgia of that game. Continuing from there, 18 percent want F.L.U.D.D. to return in a spin-off title, and 14 percent would rather have Mario team up with other companions similar to F.L.U.D.D., such as Cappy.

Should Nintendo use Donkey Kong (1981) as the basis of the anniversary celebrations for the Super Mario franchise over Super Mario Bros. (1985)?

Super Mario Bros., released in 1985, marks the debut of the Mario series, but Mario as a character debuted in 1981’s Donkey Kong. 40 percent of this poll’s voters are fine with using SMB as a reference point for the Mario series’ anniversary, while also wanting official acknowledgements of its origins in Donkey Kong. In second place, with nearly 27 percent of the votes, are those who want Super Mario Bros. to be considered the start of the franchise but use Donkey Kong as the anniversary of Mario as a character. 14 percent of people would rather have Nintendo recognize Mario’s origins in Donkey Kong and using it as the only anniversary date, paying no attention to SMB.

That’s all of the polls for this edition, so enjoy the rest of Pride Month, and make sure to tune in next month, when Hooded Pitohui (talk) is going to take over the Eleventh Poll Committee’s final Discussion!

Anniversary Announcements

Written by: Lakituthequick (talk)

Template:Quote2

Hello and welcome to Anniversary Announcements! I have no fancy intro joke this time. I've been sick the past few days plus it was like 30 °C so, I guess that happened? I hope you're doing well though!

The Pentabros

Of course, the most important thing of all things! The polls have opened! Vote now! And don't forget to check out the community awards dossier as well!
You can vote once a week, so remember to return to the polls every seven days!

Tournaments

We're in the tournament season now! Let's have a look at currently scheduled tournaments.

Mario Awards Scribble Deathmatch

A scribbling contest inspired by games such as Pictionary, skribbl.io, and the drawing games from the The Jackbox Party Pack series, in which the players get eight hours to scribble to a given prompt. The catch being that a drawing can only contain black, white, and one colour of choice, and has to fit in a small square.
The game got as many as 32 sign-ups in under 12 hours, which overwhelmed just about everyone, including GBAToad.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Time Trials

A continuation in a time trials series, this tournament has you race on a specified track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and send in the time. As a single elimination game, the slowest time each round will be dropped, with as many rounds as it takes to only have one winning player remaining. Rounds last one week each.

Minecraft

After being absent for a few years, Minecraft games are back again. Games are hosted on the MarioWiki server in a dedicated world, and includes classics such as Spleef and Capture the Flag, but also recreations of games such as Shine Runners and Apples to Apples, and originals such as Murderer and Payload.

Panel de Pon

Panel de Pon is an action puzzle game, where coloured blocks, that rise up from below the field, need to be aligned to make them disappear and earn points. It shares similarities with Tetris, but is a whole different game regardless.
The tournament takes shape in the form of a Round Robin format, where every player faces everyone else over the course of several rounds.

Super Mario Hint Hunt

The sequel to a game previously hosted in 2018, cryptic hints are given for locations in Paper Mario: The Origami King and Super Mario Odyssey, of which participants have to take a screenshot in-game when solved and found and submitted privately to TPG.

Other games that are being planned are a Killing Game (Lakituthequick and Lord Bowser), and ideas for retro games (fantanoice) and a regular Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament are circling around as well.

Awards

In this part of Anniversary Announcements, I will list all awards that have been discussed, and changes made to them. This includes existing awards, completely new ones and removals, and the additions, removals and changes within each award.

This batch includes the second half of all awards, as well as some corrections made during the full review.
I also need to make note of an oversight I made last month regarding M5-7, involving its coverage and name. The table below reflects the changes to those as well.

Refer to this document for a full list of nominees.

What's in a Campaign?

By: Chester Alan Arthur (talk)

Hello 'Shroom readers, and welcome back to another edition of What's in a Campaign?, a section where we take a deep dive into the campaigns of Robot Wars robots. Last month, we took a look at series icon and giant-flipper-on-wheels Wheely Big Cheese, and this month we have another icon on our hands, with the first truly destructive robot, the awesome disc of Hypno Disc. Created by brother Derek and Dave Rose along with their father Ken and sporting a giant disc themed after a hypnosis disc, Hypno Disc would prove itself to be the first Robot in the UK series truly capable of causing mass damage. For this edition we are going to be looking at Hypno Disc's series four run, where, after finishing runner up in series three, Hypno Disc has returned better then ever looking to claim the championship.

Spin to win baby

Speaking of series three, in series three, Hypno Disc was a force to be reckoned with, but it suffered from a few design flaws. For one thing, it didn't have a self-righter, which was pretty common at the time. But a more serious flaw was the fact that it couldn't move and spin up the disc at the same time, which significantly cut down the time that they could attack. In addition to that, the amount of recoil damage they took per attack combined with the fact that team member Derek Rose had to leave for work reasons proved to be their downfall, as during the series final against Chaos 2, Hypno Disc's disc would barely work and Chaos 2 would make short work of it. For series four, the team decided to build an entirely new Hypno Disc based on the design of the previous robot. This version was powered by three 750 watt motors, allowing it to reach a top speed of twenty miles per hour. The team also added a self-righting arm at the back (as well as some spikes just to look cool). But the biggest upgrade the team did was to the disc. First thing is first, the disc's motors were made much more powerful, allowing it to reach speeds of 750 RPMs (revolutions per minutes) in 3.5 seconds, according to the team. That basically means it speeds up twice as fast as it did in series three and also has 50% more power behind each hit! (To simplify things a bit, according to the Rose team, the disc at full speed basically hits at 75 mph.) They also added thicker larger teeth mounted to opposite sides of the disc, with the basic idea being that these teeth, when they make contact with the armor of opponents, would essentially grip it and rip it off, as opposed to the teeth from the previous war which more focused on cutting and slashing. But perhaps the most important change is that the disc can now spin up while the robot is driving, greatly increasing the amount of attack time Hypno Disc has. Now that we've got all the upgrades out of the way, it's time to take a dive into the campaign of Hypno Disc. As always, all images are sourced from the wonderful Robot Wars Wiki and I'll be sure to include a video where you can watch all these fights with time stamps for when they start.

As the runner-ups in the previous wars, Hypno Disc was given the second seed and placed in Heat P. Placed up against the actually pretty decent arm flipper Raizer Blade and the classic fodder robot The Predator, Hypno Disc would waste no time showing off how impressive its upgrades were (4:05). The first strike Hypno Disc gets in on The Predator smashes in its back armor. From there, Hypno Disc initially spends all its time striking The Predator, getting in two more impressive hits before Raizer Blade decides to foolishly strike at Hypno Disc. I'm guessing the Raizer Blade team immediately regretted their decision, because Hypno Disc then turned their blade onto them. While their attacks don't cause quite as much outward damage to Raizer Blade, it clearly causes some sort of inward damage because, after a few attacks, Raizer Blade basically stops moving. The rest of the fight is just Hypno Disc's smashing into it's opponents causing massive damage especially to the Predator who gets their batteries torn out and destroyed by Hypno Disc as the fight is called due to both opponents being immobilized and the batteries starting to smoke from the hits.
The aftermath of true destruction.
Interestingly enough, Raizer Blade actually breaks down before The Predator does, so it should have been eliminated, but because of all the damage done to The Predator, Raizer Blade is sent to the second round.

Hypno Disc's next opponent is the pneumatic ram bot V-Max (7:15). Originally a reservist, V-Max was called up from the reserves due to Onslaught breaking down before i's first round fight. Honestly, V-Max is a quality little machine. In its first round fight, it manages to KO the startlingly high (18) machine Cerberus and is looking to perform another upset. Unfortunately for the V-Max team, Hypno Disc is properly seeded and proves it, because the first attack Hypno Disc does, it not only rips off a side panel but it also severs V-Max's pneumatic line, making its weapon useless. It's kind of a shame, because there's a part where V-Max manages to get under Hypno Disc and slam it into the wall, and who knows maybe if its ram was working it could have pinned Hypno Disc to the wall, KOing it. But since its weapon wasn't working, Hypno Disc recovers from that attack, and after one more strike into its opponent's exposed innards, Hypno Disc knocks out the plucky V-Max. This puts Hypno Disc into the heat final against Raizer Blade (11:31), and I'll be honest and tell you that this isn't a fight. Raizer Blade, who only made it to the heat final because it's second round opponent, Terror Bull, threw the fight by burning out itss motors on the flame pit so they wouldn't have to fight Hypno Disc, enters the fight essentially bleeding to death. It can barely move and its pneumatic lines are leaking. They try to make a go of it, but they just can't do anything, and, after two hits, Hypno Disc KOs them. After taking off part of the front, the Hypno Disc boys are sporting enough to leave the machine alone instead of causing more damage.

This victory sends Hypno Disc into the series semi-final, where it's first matched up against the upset heat winner Splinter (17:00). Splinter, armed with two grabbing arms and a front scoop, comes into the fight as a major underdog. Nobody in the series so far has managed to stand up to Hypno Disc's blade, but the Splinter team has a plan. You see, at the center of Splinter is a scoop that's made out of flexible material. This material should be able to absorb the hits from the mighty disc, allowing Splinter to control the fight. As long as Splinter manages to keep at its scoop at the right angle to meet Hypno Disc's attacks, the Splinter boys should be able to avoid taking massive damage, and, for about the first thirty seconds, that's exactly how the fight goes. Splinter absorbs the first few Hypno Disc attacks and even manages to get a couple charges on Hypno Disc and deliver them to the CPZ, where Dead Metal puts its saw in Hypno Disc's back. But then, sadly for Splinter, their scoop meets the disc at the wrong angle and Hypno Disc's disc tears the scoop right off.

Once a semi-finalist, now a pile of scrap
And from here it turns into one of Robot Wars' most famous destruction battles, as Hypno Disc tears into Splinter, basically rendering it a pile of scrap by the end of the fight (the Splinter team gave the Hypno Disc team permission to do as much damage as possible because they were planning on building a new one anyways).

With this win, Hypno Disc moves onto round two of the series semi-finals, where they're placed up against the 11th seeded Wild Thing, who are basically a two wheeled wedge armed with a lifting arm and are one fight away from the grand final. The fight begins (20:33) and Wild Thing, realizing that their lifting arm would probably just get torn off against the mighty disc, elects to fight with the arm up and fight as a straight wedge instead (much to the utter confusion of commentator Johnathan Pearce). This fight is an all-time classic between two robots who match up well against each other. At the start of the fight, Wild Thing mange's to get under Hypno Disc a few times, but the bulk of the first half is dominated by Hypno Disc. Hypno Disc smashes its blade into Wild Thing, the recoil from the hits causing Wild Thing to spin in place. Blow after blow lands, causing major damage to Wild Thing as its tires are wrecked and bits and pieces are torn right off the wedge. But Hypno Disc would learn, as many robots do, that you just can't kill the Wild Thing. As the fight wears on, Wild Thing begins to take control of the fight. In a lot of early spinners, the power of the weapon tended to cause recoil damage to the machine itself, so, the longer a fight goes, the weaker the machine becomes. Unfortunately for Hypno Disc, Wild Thing is a master of durability. The disc of Hypno Disc begins to slow and Wild Thing begins getting under Hypno Disc, slamming it around, slamming it into Dead Metal, and slamming it into the wall as the match goes to the judges. But with damage being the category with the most points given out, it comes to no surprise that Hypno Disc moved onto the grand final.

In the grand final, Hypno Disc is matched up with Pussycat, a pyramid-shaped robot with a custom-made saw wheel driven by the legendary David Gribble (rest in peace), only needing to beat them to move onto the championship match. Obviously in this match, as in every match, Hypno Disc is a heavy favorite. The fight starts (25:22, Hypno Disc turns to get itss disc up to speed, but Pussycat charges in, striking the wheel of Hypno Disc. In a one in a million shot, Pussycat bends the wheel guard of its foe, Hypno Disc to only be able to move in circles. Call it luck, call it skill, call it whatever, Hypno Disc can't move outside of its circumference and is counted out, tragically ending its championship ambitions. If that strike hadn't happened, I'm (and many other fans) convinced Hypno Disc would have won that fight. (In the fight itself, after being reduced to spinning in circles, Hypno Disc's blade makes contact with Pussycat's blade and drives Pussycat's blade completely into Pussycat). From there, Hypno Disc would have faced the mighty flipper of Chaos 2, but, with Hypno Disc's more powerful disc and their new self righter they'd have destroyed Chaos 2 and won the championship. But that's not what happened. Instead that, fight against Pussycat and that tiny error by the team would mark their last appearance in Series four.
Yeah, I agree, Shunt. Playoffs are dumb.

Now, Hypno Disc was supposed to have at least two more fights because there was supposed to be a third place playoff in the grand final, but due to the house robots causing a lot of damage to Hypno Disc (including Shunt driving its axe through the disc), Hypno Disc wasn't able to participate, forfeiting the playoff and finishing 4th overall. Hypno Disc was also due to participate in the surprisingly good Series 4 War of Independence special which pitted British robots against American robots, but because all the American robots had been defeated already before the first round fight, the producers decided to pull Hypno Disc out of the tournament and replaced it with the Napalm team's series one robot Detonator.

That concludes Hypno Disc's series four performance. Overall, it was a great machine and, if not for a tactical error in the grand final, they probably would have won the championship. Tune in next month when I cover another robot. If you'd like to have a voice in picking that robot, check out the What's in a Campaign? forum thread and vote for the robot you want to see covered!

Forum Update

Written by: Hooded Pitohui (talk)

Hello, readers of The 'Shroom! Welcome to another edition of Forum Update, a section which I've decided I'll make into a monthly submission after all!. With credit to MrConcreteDonkey (talk) for the formatting of the section, I'll be covering what's been happening on the forum since May 15th.

News

As many of you have already noticed, the Super Mario Boards has a dark theme now! Down on the bottom left corner of the page, next to the buttons that allow you to change the width of the page and to change whether the forum displays the time to you in a 12-hour AM/PM format or a 24-hour format, there's now a style chooser button. You can choose between the traditional "Mario Boards" style or the admittedly cool-sounding "Dark Boards" style. Hopefully this extra choice helps everyone have a more pleasant reading experience on the forum.

While you can find out more details in Lakituthequick's Anniversary Announcements on this very page, I do want to point out that Awards season is now in full swing, with the polls having gone up on June 13th. Please be sure to vote in the Mario and Fail Awards and in the Community Awards. Don't forget, you can vote once a week! Be on the lookout for signups for Awards presentations to open soon.

Bans

There have been no notable bans in the past month. Keep that up and stay behaved!

Thread of the Month

Here's a Rock - What started off as a simple Mindless Junk thread asking users what they would do with a rock they were given to throw turned into a lengthy tongue-in-cheek flamewar and eventual debate between Hooded Pitohui and Luigi 64DD, taking on the role of a pitohui and a goose, respectively. Have you ever wondered what it might look like if unruly birds were given access to social media? Find out here!

Daily VGM Thread - Honorable mention this month goes to this thread in recognition of Shy Guy on Wheel's dedication to providing the Super Mario Boards with new obscure videogame music, with his commentary, every single day.

Mario Awards Scribble Deathmatch - Another honorable mention goes to GBA's new awards tournament. While I'll allow Anniversary Announcements to cover awards games and tournaments in more detail, it must be acknowledged the GBA's new twist on the old awards art tournaments, offering a quick and easy way for folks of all skill levels to participate, has been enormously successful in attracting participants. It's set to begin a few days after this issue releases, so make sure you support it with your participation if you signed up!
