Rock Pikmin's Spirit sprite from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
I love those Pikmin

I'm PopitTart. I'm more of a casual here. My focus is on Pikipedia under the same username.

Proposal Draft

Recently, Mario Portal updated to cover enemies from New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder which is a great boon for enemy documentation, but there is another thing that changed with this update. Namely, nearly every instance of enemies being named titles like "Mega Koopa Troopa (Red)" or "Cataquack (Blue)" has been changed to "Red Mega Koopa Troopa" and "Blue Cataquack" across the entire series. Enemies which have distinct behavior depending on their coloration now have fully distinct names, rather than parenthetical disambiguators. This begs the question: Should Super Mario Wiki follow suit? After all, what is different between Goomba and Mega Goomba that doesn't also apply to the difference between Red Koopa Troopa and Green Koopa Troopa? What makes Gold Koopa adequately distinct and not Red and Green?

This proposal aims to recognize these variants on equal ground as other variants that the wiki splits. This would necessarily mean that every single instance of a colored Shy Guy or Yoshi gets an entirely distinct page, heaven forbid. Just that enemies that are distinguished by color scheme should be considered on par with size variants and the rest.

For most enemies, this would create an "umbrella" article, such as Koopa Troopa over Red Koopa Troopa and Green Koopa Troopa. This article would document games where a distinction between Red Koopas and Green Koopas is either irrelevant or nonexistent, such as Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario 64, and the Mario Kart games. For reference, see the relationship between Koopa Shell, Green Shell, and Red Shell. Some enemies would not get "umbrella articles", such as Trompette. There currently only exist Brown Trompette and Purple Trompette in the same game, so there is no such general "Trompette". These cases would receive a disambiguation page with some brief information shared between the variants it provides, similarly to Tileoid.

What enemies would this apply to? Well, Here's a list of color-distinguished enemies listed in the Mario Portal (and a couple more from some deeper research) sorted into categories based on how they differ.

Ledge Conscious - the latter subject turns around when reaching a ledge, like Goombrat to Goomba.
  • Green Koopa Troopa/Red Koopa Troopa
  • Red Shy Guy/Pink Shy Guy (SMB2)
  • Red Snifit/Pink Snifit (SMB2)
    • Important to note for the above two that the Pink enemies were made blue in Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance. Despite this, the Nintendo Player's Guide for All-Stars still calls them "Shyguy Pink" and "Pink Snifit". The Super Mario Advance manual uses "Blue Snifit". In total, it seems like there would need to be Red, Pink, and Blue pages? Discussion certainly open.
  • giant Red Shy Guy/giant Blue Shy Guy (SMA)
  • Green Big Koopa Troopa/Red Big Koopa Troopa
  • Brown Trompette/Purple Trompette
  • Green Gamboo/Purple Gamboo
  • Gold Metal Gamboo/Silver Metal Gamboo
Movement Differences - These enemies seem to be distinguished by how they behave in other ways.
  • Green Koopa Paratroopa/Red Koopa Paratroopa
  • Red Cheep Cheep/Gray Cheep Cheep (SMB1, the latter is also faster)
  • Piranha Plant/Red Piranha Plant (SMBLL, the latter is also faster)
  • Green Mega Piranha Plant/Red Mega Piranha Plant
  • Spiny Egg/Green Spiny Egg
  • Paragoomba/Red Paragoomba
  • Cheep Cheep/Green Cheep Cheep (SMB3)
  • Yellow Koopa Troopa
  • Yellow Koopa Paratroopa
  • Blue Swipin' Stu/Green Swipin' Stu
  • Gray Beezo/Red Beezo
  • Ninji A/Ninji B (Not actually different colors, but conceptually related.)
  • Gray Panser/Pink Panser/Red Panser
  • Gray Snifit
  • Bullet Bill/Blue Bullet Bill/Purple Bullet Bill
  • Blue Electro-Koopa/Red Electro-Koopa
  • Blue Cataquack/Red Cataquack
  • King Kaliente/Black King Kaliente
  • Dino Piranha/Black Dino Piranha
  • Blue Crabber/Red Crabber
  • Lava Bubble/Blue Lava Bubble
Speed - These enemies behave mostly the same, but one is faster.
  • Green Climbing Koopa/Red Climbing Koopa
  • Blue Koopa Troopa
  • Green Sugarstar/ Purple Sugarstar
  • Red Pokipede/Green Pokipede
Other
  • Yellow Konk/Blue Konk (Different colors based on their direction)
  • Green Bloomp/Purple Bloomp/gray Bloomp (Purples are spawned repeatedly from blasters, grays don't move)
