Scuttlebugs (originally phrased Scuttle Bugs)[1] are round striped spider-like arachnids that act as semi-recurring enemies in the Super Mario franchise. Their design from Super Mario 64 DS onward resembles the Joro spider, a ubiquitous species in Japan, similar to other spider enemies, such as Suu or Arachne.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Scuttle BugA Scuttle Bug in Super Mario 64 DS
Scuttle Bugs received a significant redesign from Super Mario 64, pictured left, to its Nintendo DS remake, pictured right.

Scuttle Bugs first appear in Super Mario 64 and later in its remake, Super Mario 64 DS. They behave similarly to Goombas; when in range, they charge at the player character, though one can defeat a Scuttle Bug by punching and stepping on their heads. Scuttle Bugs live in the Hazy Maze Cave and outside Big Boo's Haunt. The only differences between Goombas are that they give three coins instead of just one, they are faster to charge, they can change the home area they patrol,[2] and they move in a circular pattern when Mario is not nearby;[3] their behavior is shared with grounded Skeeters. In the remake, Scuttle Bugs have been redesigned to have black and yellow stripes like a bee, a distinct head, legs of the same color as their bodies, and red suction cup-like feet.

In pre-release versions of Super Mario 64, Scuttle Bugs have a mahogany, modeled body instead of the flat marble-like texture, and also have bushy, angry eyebrows.[4]

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Scuttlebugs appear in New Super Mario Bros. under their current name, reusing their redesigned appearance from Super Mario 64 DS. They can be found hanging down from webs in World 4-1. They repeatedly move up and down, and can prove to be useful in giving some extra height by jumping off of them. They also appear in World 8-4, where they ceaselessly drop down from the top of the stage in pairs of two. They detach from their webs almost immediately, and drop onto the ground to give chase.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

A Scuttlebug in New Super Mario Bros. 2.
A Scuttlebug in New Super Mario Bros. 2

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Scuttlebugs (referred to as Spiders in the Prima guide)[5] hang from webs, just like their New Super Mario Bros. incarnations. However, they no longer walk around. Their appearance has changed; instead of being yellow with three black stripes and having black heads, they are yellow with two purple stripes and purple heads, as well as having white mandibles. Their legs, which are just yellow, also no longer end in suction cups, instead having clenched boxing gloves. They appear in World 3-3 and World 3-Warp Cannon.

Super Mario Run[edit]

Scuttlebugs appear in the version 3.0.4 update of Super Mario Run, in the level Scuttlebug Forest. They also appear in Secret Courses or Special Remix Courses while playing Remix 10. They have the same appearance and behavior as their New Super Mario Bros. 2 incarnations.

Mario Golf (Nintendo 64)[edit]

"Scuttle Bug" is a name sometimes displayed on the tournament board in the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf.

Mario Party series[edit]

Spider Stomp from Mario Party 7
Scuttle Bugs are the main obstacle of Mario Party 7's Spider Stomp minigame

Scuttlebugs appear infrequently in minigames in the Mario Party series. In Mario Party 7, they appear in Spider Stomp, along with a giant variant, and are generically named "spiders." Both teams compete to defeat all the spiders, which can shoot web projectiles, along a narrow path in the jungle until reaching the end. In Mario Party DS, Scuttlebugs appear in Crazy Crosshairs, with their Super Mario 64 DS appearance, where both teams have to use toy tanks to shoot the Scuttlebugs on a spiderweb; additionally, there are golden Scuttlebugs, each worth three points instead of one.

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

Scuttlebugs are enemies in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They are encountered in World 3 only. Many walk around on the ground, while others are attached to the ceiling using thread-like webs. If Mario battles a Scuttlebug on the ground, the enemy can either slam into Mario or shoot a web at him. If a hanging Scuttlebug is battled, it can only slam into Mario, but with a much higher damage ratio. The Scuttlebugs can also change their position on their strings to avoid hammer and ground attacks, similar to that of Piders and Arantulas from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Scuttlebugs hold a Wiggler Segment hostage in Rustle Burrow, an area with most of its inhabitants being Scuttlebugs.

There are also miniature Scuttlebugs that cannot be battled, but chase Mario if he gets close to them. If one of them touches Mario, he jumps lower and moves slower until it is removed, very similar to Mini Goombas in other games. They can be defeated by hitting them with a hammer, using a Super Star, or jumping on them. Defeating one results in getting a coin or a Jump sticker, unless a Super Star is used, in which case only the coin drops. A Big Scuttlebug also appears as a mini-boss.

This is the last game where Scuttlebugs use their Super Mario 64 DS design.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

An origami Scuttlebug

Scuttlebugs return in Paper Mario: The Origami King, where origami variants act as enemies in the Princess Peach and the Temple of Shrooms. They use their New Super Mario Bros. 2 design.

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX[edit]

Scuttlebugs also appear as items in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, and the player can use them to hit other racers with spiderwebs.

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-up of Minecraft, Spiders are replaced by Scuttlebugs, which take on their New Super Mario Bros. 2 appearance.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Scuttlebugs appear in Dr. Mario World as obtainable assistants. They also appear in the background of World 9 when an area has been cleared. In stage mode, its effect is to increase the skill meter by an extra portion if red viruses are eliminated, so for example if the percentage is 10% the skill meter is filled by an extra 0.1 points per red virus eliminated. In versus mode, its effect is to reduce the time before the stage starts shrinking the playing field by a percentage, which can stack with Octoomba's versus effect to further reduce the time.

Merchandise[edit]

A Scuttlebug is one of the figures in Series 3 of the Character Packs in the LEGO Super Mario line of merchandise.
