Composed by:
Eveline Fischer
First appearance Donkey Kong Country (1994)
Latest appearance Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2019)

"Simian Segue,"[1] also known as "THE MAP PAGE,"[2] is a recurring theme composed by Eveline Fischer for Donkey Kong Country, used as the theme for the world maps. The composition has since been used and rearranged for various entries in the Donkey Kong franchise.

Reuses[edit]

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl: A medley of "Simian Segue" and "Bonus Room Blitz" appears in this game, titled after their Japanese soundtrack names, "The Map Page / Bonus Level." It plays on the Rumble Falls stage.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: The "The Map Page / Bonus Level" medley returns in this game, where it can be played on any Donkey Kong-series stage, Battlefield, and Final Destination. It is also used on the DK Island map in the World of Light, which is a recreation of Kongo Jungle from Donkey Kong Country.

Arrangements[edit]

Donkey Kong Country series[edit]

Donkey Kong Country Returns[edit]

"Simian Segue" returns as the world map theme for Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS reissue. There exist several rearranged variations of the theme, one for each world, as well as one for viewing Donkey Kong Island as a whole.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]

An arrangement of "Simian Segue" was also made for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and its Nintendo Switch reissue. Unlike in Donkey Kong Country Returns, the theme is shared across each world, much like in the original Donkey Kong Country.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

In the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a small portion of the theme plays as a jingle whenever the player completes a puzzle.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features a big-band arrangement of "Simian Segue" and "Bonus Room Blitz," again titled after the two themes' Japanese names, "The Map Page / Bonus Level." It can be played on any Donkey Kong-series stage, Battlefield, and Final Destination. It was also featured in the "Items" section of the August 2018 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct.

The medley was arranged by PlatinumGames composer Hiroshi Yamaguchi, with fellow composer Naofumi Harada performing on guitar. Yamaguchi chose to arrange these tracks not only because of his memories of playing Donkey Kong Country with his sister when he was in junior high school, but also to attempt a new genre of music that he would not normally be able to work on at PlatinumGames.[3]
