The Kongo Jungle is a vast jungle found on Donkey Kong Island, at the foot of Monkey Mines. First appearing in Donkey Kong Country, Kongo Jungle is the place where DK's Tree House and the Banana Hoard is found; a distinction shared with the similar Jungle world in Donkey Kong Country Returns, which has been suggested to be the same location.[1] It is named from both "Kong" and the Congo Basin, a section of Africa which covers territory in nine different countries (most notably the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo) and is known for its dense rainforests, including natural ranges of wild gorillas.

In Donkey Kong Country, Kongo Jungle is the first world. Most of the area is engulfed in a jungle, but there is a long cavern about midway through. The cavern's exit leads to the second half of Kongo Jungle, which itself directly leads to a large lake. The original Super Nintendo Entertainment System release shows two halves of Kongo Jungle in separate screens. The levels are as follows:

Jungle Hijinxs | The first level of Kongo Jungle, Jungle Hijinxs introduces basic enemies such as Kritters and Gnawties. Most of the level is straightforward, but has a few pits near the end. Rambi appears about halfway through, and he can ram into enemies and walls that patch up Bonus Areas. |

Ropey Rampage | The second level of Kongo Jungle, Ropey Rampage takes place directly during a tropical rainstorm at night. The main theme of the level is for the Kongs to walk on treetops and swing on Ropes across large abysses. This level introduces the aerial enemy, Zingers, and rolling armadillos, Armies. |

Reptile Rumble | The third level of Kongo Jungle, Reptile Rumble takes place inside a cavern tunnel with a bumpy ground. The level's elevation varies, and tires are needed to reach the higher ledges. Kritters often guard the upper or lower steeped areas, Zingers are usually around the tires, and Slippas slither along the ground. |

Coral Capers | The fourth level of Kongo Jungle, Coral Capers is the first underwater level, and is set in a coral reef. There are coral walls with items such as bananas. Every underwater enemy debuts in this level except Squidge. The Kongs can free Enguarde from an Animal Crate to help defeat some aquatic foes. |

Barrel Cannon Canyon | The fifth and final level of Kongo Jungle, Barrel Cannon Canyon has several Barrel Cannons and Blast Barrels, used mainly for crossing the large pits. The level features several Kritters, especially the bouncing type, and Zingers. |

Donkey Kong Country television series[edit]
Kongo Jungle reappears as the Kongs' residence for the Donkey Kong Country television series.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Kongo Jungle (spelled "Congo Jungle" in the original Super Smash Bros.) appears as one of the arenas in Super Smash Bros. The Kongo Jungle stage is made out of a large wooden platform with several smaller, sometimes floating ones around it. There is also a vast jungle in the background of the arena and a Barrel Cannon underneath the arena. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, in addition to the previous Kongo Jungle returning, another Kongo Jungle stage (later renamed "Kongo Falls" in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) was introduced. This Kongo Jungle stage is constructed out of logs strewn together, which are sitting on rocks jutting out of a waterfall. In the background of this stage is a vast jungle along with what appears to be DK's Tree House. Kongo Jungle in Super Smash Bros. later returns in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while both versions reappear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Exclusively in World of Light of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a recreation of the original Kongo Jungle, where it is named DK Island. It can be visited via a portal on the east side of the world map. In DK Island, Donkey Kong-series spirits appear in the locations the levels were originally (with the exception of Barrel Cannon Canyon; Jungle Hijinxs serves as the area's starting point), in the following order: Kritter (Ropey Rampage), Cranky Kong (Cranky's Cabin), Zinger (Reptile Rumble), Enguarde (Coral Capers), Funky Kong (Funky's Flights), Candy Kong (Candy's Save Point), and Diddy Kong (Very Gnawty's Lair). Defeating Funky Kong's puppet fighter unlocks Funky Kong's Shack, one of the shops in Spirits mode.
