Bob-omb Breakers is a Puyo Puyo-like 4-Player minigame from Mario Party 4 and a Puzzle minigame from Mario Party DS.
Overview[edit]
Players earn points by grouping three or more similarly colored blocks to break them. Further points are earned from chains, where more groups of blocks are broken in a row. Bob-ombs can sometimes fall and explode by being surrounded with blocks. Though a 3x9 column is assigned to each player, they can still match blocks in others' columns, but if a player's column overflows, they are unable to play unless the blocks are cleared from their column. The first player to get 100 points wins, though if only one player's column has not overflown, that player wins instead.
Some changes were done in the one-player Mario Party DS version, though the two-player version has the same rules as in Mario Party 4. Gameplay is done from the touch screen, while the top screen only gives a hint about surrounding a Bob-omb. There is also an "all clear" bonus worth 1,000 points. The amount of points earned from matching blocks equals the number cleared at once multiplied by the current level number, and a chain reaction also multiplies the position of the chain. Each level has a gauge, with the leftmost and rightmost columns closing after the first tier, then two more columns after the second tier, and two more columns once the gauge is full, leaving only the middle three columns open; by leveling up, the gauge resets, and the affected columns are reopened. One can go up to level 99, and clearing it only empties the gauge again.[1]
